JOHN McCarthy has all but booked his spot in Port Adelaide's round-one team.

The former Magpie - controversially recruited by the Power in the pre-season draft - was a standout in the club's thrilling, five-point NAB Cup loss to West Coast, prompting coach Matthew Primus to pencil him in his best side for the start of the premiership season.

It is with great sadness that the Port Adelaide Football Club today confirms the tragic death of player John McCarthy.

John, 22, was holidaying in the United States with 10 team mates. The club was informed by US authorities in Las Vegas this morning that John had died as a result of injuries sustained in a fall from a building. The circumstances of the tragedy are still being investigated.

Update on Las Vegas investigation

The Port Adelaide Football Club provides the following update on the investigation into the death of player John McCarthy.

Authorities in Las Vegas are continuing their investigation and are awaiting test results and further information. We understand that a full report will not be available for some weeks.

However, from their inquiries to date they have today confirmed to us that they believe John’s death was likely to have been a tragic accident after he slipped and fell when trying to climb down a palm tree close to the building.

Port Adelaide Football Club chief executive officer Keith Thomas said the club was unable to provide any further information at this stage.

“On behalf of John McCarthy’s family and the Port Adelaide Football Club, we thank the US authorities, particularly the Las Vegas Police Department, the Clark County Coroner’s Office and the Medical Examiner’s Office for their diligence and sensitivity in investigating this terrible event.”

BRENT Macaffer will wear the No. 3 guernsey this season in honour of former teammate, the late John McCarthy.

McCarthy, who died while on an end of season trip with Port Adelaide teammates in Las Vegas in September 2012, wore the jumper in his final three seasons at Collingwood.

Macaffer, a close mate of McCarthy's, was offered the opportunity to wear the number by coach Nathan Buckley, after donning the No. 30 jumper in the club's 2010 premiership.
