Jono Brown - his 'leadership'

Wait so, you are saying, as soon as Voss came on and Leigh left, our "Winning Culture" vanished...Despite the fact that from 2004 to 2008, we did not play finals football at all, nor did we look like we were going to...Then, in 2009, we made the finals, before failing dismally at the trade table and being in a rebuild since then...

The problems our club are facing right now is more of young players being taken out of their comfort zones to Brisbane, and then telling us despite most of them getting regular games, they want to return home. Doc and Yeo were consistently played this season, Longer is only 2 years into his AFL career as a developing ruckman, Polecs been injured since he joined us and we've done everything we can to get him fit and playing.
No I'm saying that Voss and Brown have presided as coach and captain, the two highest offices within the football department over a downturn in Brisbane success and Brisbane's ability to retain players. They are two of the biggest indications of a winning and successful culture.

As I mentioned their are mitigating circumstances. 3 flags and multiple finals will always lead to a downturn at some stage (unless you are Geelong). The board have been a bit of a shambles and you can even blame the supporters as the crowd support hasn't exactly been as good as you'd like. The Fev and Co experiment certainly can't be blamed on Brown.

3 first round draft picks and 2 second round draft picks are walking out the door. Rischitelli won a B+F and walked. Brennan walked. Mitch Clark wanted to go home but then settled half way in Melbourne with extra cash, extra cash Brisbane couldn't offer because their salary cap was squeezed by Fev.

Jono Brown was asked about all these guys leaving and replied something along the lines of 'well you look at the guys and you'll see a lot of them haven't been getting games'. Well that's a rubbish response from a captain. He should've said he'll sit down with each one of them, explain what a great club and city Brisbane can be and the benefits of staying and he'll do more in the future to make sure the kids they draft settle and stay in Brisbane.

Captains can't overcome severe administrative blunders, no matter how good they are.

I think the main reason Brown is rated as a captain has been his ability to kick clutch goals, take important marks, and play with no fear.
This

Nobody could convince anybody bar very passionate brisbane fans on what his off-field leadership is. Same deal as Vandenberg/Maxwell, May not be the best players however they are captains for a reason.

However on-field leadership he's about the best you can hope for and one of the best i've ever seen.

Other things are happening in brisbane, We all know the off-field stuff and admin is currently not right, I doubt Jon Brown to put on a suit and start running the club. So no slight on him

I honestly can't imagine Brown being anything other than a terrific off field leader. He speaks extremely well (some might say is a bit rough around the edges, I disagree - country lad who sounds genuine), is obviously very confident and I have no doubts would try and get to know the young blokes as soon as possible. I'd guess he would be very respected but would also make sure he's on the same level as everyone else. I'm not in the inner sanctums of the club - and only those that are would truly know - but whenever I hear him he screams leadership, like Pav does at Freo, Watson does at Essendon and Hodge at Hawthorn.

His on field leadership is not in doubt.

Eddie maybe might get something out of following Brown and his off field leadership performances.

WTF does it matter? Those sooky la-la kids were already gone. No-one amount of a "talking to" was ever go to change their minds.

And what a crap captain Maxy is. But they have been done to death, yet here we have a club that is melting down and the role of the captain is ignored.

Oh please. 'Melting down'? Brisbane are far from 'melting down'.

That sort of statement is typical of the hyperbole some sections of the media indulge in. It's just lazy speculation for the most part. Or advanced by those with an agenda.

Wow Brisbane fans are super sensitive at the moment....

No one can doubt his on field leadership but in all honesty people are going to question whats happening of field under his watch as captain.

You realise we had a number 1 draft pick walk out the year we won the flag? Players leaving Brisbane is unfortunately something of a way of life which people don't seem to get. J. Brown has nothing to do with it, unless you want to say Voss was a dud captain too.

What would you do in his situation? Honest question.

Because I guarantee, the guy goes above and beyond for our football club in every way he can.

I don't know because I have never been in that situation. Neither have you I am guessing. And do you really know what goes on behind closed doors... Unless you are actually a Brisbane player we don't really know whats the real situation now and what was the deal with Fev and the last few years. Much like Collingwood with their "rat pack" and "selfish" football lately people are going to question Maxwell and Port with their dramas back in 2008/9 people question Tredreas captaincy.

For years the AFL media contingent has told us what a great leader Jonathon Brown is.

Do they ever look at actual events v myths? When Fev went to Brisbane the media assured us that Jono would control him. End result, loss of players/picks, huge financial cost and severe loss of fae for new coach Michael Voss.

Fast forward and we are now watching a huge exodus of young talent try and leave. If they all go it will wipe out their top picks from two recent drafts.

All under his watch, yet the media continues to laud him as a great skipper when the evidence would suggest he is a great player but little one of the worst captains in the AFL.

Funnily enough I had considered starting a similar thread as I tend to agree.

Is often pointed to as a great captain, but exposed evidence would say that he really hasn't been a great leader - I might actually go as far as to say he's a relatively poor leader.

Sorry think this is a typical kneejerk reaction. Captains can only influence clubs so much. Too convenient to attch labels to the figureheads. From the outside , which is all we can go on, he seems a great leader

So you agree it's a shit thread then. Cool.

Tredrea was the opposite of Brown.

Great captain. Shit bloke.

Does anyone else here actually know what happens behind the scenes at Brisbane to call him out as a bad captain?? A few young guys that weren't getting games want to leave, a guy wants to go home, and it's his leadership?? Has anyone been able to contain Fev?

No, but seriously, people of BF know five eights of **** all in relation to just about every topic.

I do agree with the general idea however, that a great captain goes a long way to making players want to stay at a club.

Oh look at that. It must be the silly season already. Just what we need, another anti-Brisbane thread by Morsloth. As Baldrick would say, "This is a cunning plan" to disguise this trolling effort as a legitimate discussion, when it is Bay 13 worthy.

Things happen at ALL football clubs...Where was Nick R when the dwarf was set on fire ?

Why didn't Jobe Watson lead by example & make a stand like David Zaharakis & say no to the injections ?

Why didn't Nick Maxwell stop Eddie McGuire making those derogatory comments on air against Adam Goodes ? Why didn't Nick also stop Didak from getting into that car with the bikie criminal ? Because we all know now that he is selfish.

What is Morgoth's fascination with negative posts/threads against Brisbane ? And Morgoth did you cry like a baby after the GF like MM & Lica ?

FWIW, I'd heap more blame on Voss & the Lion's board before I blame JB.

Is there ANY AFL club that would not have liked to had JB as (1) CHF & (2) Captain in his prime ?
