More info on Josh Francou
Josh won the 1996 Magarey Medal playing for North Adelaide and carried that form to the higher level.
Francou was one of the most impressive of Port’s many AFL debutants in 1997, playing all 22 games and showing that he was a player capable of racking up plenty of possessions at the highest level of the game. A lightly built dasher whose disposal finished off his work nicely, he quickly developed into one of the best midfielders in the AFL.
In a superb 2001 season he finished equal third in the Brownlow, three behind the winner, Jason Akermanis.
His kick winning ability, especially at centre bounces made him one of the most potent midfielders in the game in 2002. In an outstanding Port unit he managed to outstrip other talented teammates by significant margins in terms of handballs and loose ball gets. That made him one of the club’s most important players.
However, Francou severely injured a knee in a round 2 match against Brisbane in 2003 and had to undergo a knee reconstruction.
He looked to be on the road to recovery in the following pre-season but reinjured the knee late in January 2004 and was forced to miss another season.
Francou returned to play another 23 games in 2005 and retired in 2006.
Josh is currently involved in football mainly through his work with the 5AA commentary team.
