I imagine he jumped. I don't think he came off the tracks after Geelong. I think to save his reputation they let him jump and buried what they knew.

He's since admitted he would fall asleep and not show up for meetings etc. Geelong covered extremely well for him. I didn't seem to be broadly known or rumoured that he had fallen as hard as he did.

Players should be empowered to make those decisions on field for themselves. Only way to achieve long term success even if it takes a little longer to learn or a different coach is appointed.

Could be. Or could be coaches wanting to collaborate with their players face-to-face to hear what's happening inside the white lines. I coach from the bench in Premier games and State games. Really helps. Doesn't have to result in a loss of empowerment of player decision making at all if done correctly.

Sure, you're not melting. Maybe I should give you some credit for going the sarcastic "champ" route as an upgrade to calling him "mumbles" for the past couple of years. Your views are pretty clear and previously stated that he's already failed.

I didn't compare Longmuir to Fagan. I said a season was long and that an early scenario of a win/loss ratio of less than 50/50 can be turned around. I could have used the example of Mitchell at Hawthorn who was 0W 5L this year, or Kingsley at GWS who was 3W 7L after Round 10 last year.

I'm not calling for Longmuir's contract to be extended before the season starts, but I don't think the fact that he was given an extension at the start of last year saved his position. If they wanted to sack him they would have, but my guess is that they considered that a 12W 1D 10L season wasn't a failure.

when I first read the feeder club’s response to you post, i thought to myself that there is irrefutable evidence of the idea that interpretation is a creative act. Thought about posting something to that effect but figured I’d come across as wanky, so thank you, Fagan.

He doesn't seem inspirational and we struggle in first quarters.

We have lost games to teams we shouldn't in successive years, Kangas and WCE. Those were unforgivable in both seasons.

Losing from 25 up in the last quarter against a poor team in Essendon. Terrible loss. Made worse by our set up at centre bounces, 4 in a row with no one on the defensive side. Dumb from the coach and the players. And some of my favourites were in there.

We don't finish top 5 this year we must move him on. I say top five because if we finish 5th and win 15 games I would accept that. We would need to win through to a prelim and at least give it a shake.

Zero players left, 1 desperate to come. Good result would you say? Gotta hand it to the coach. They really play for him.

You are arguing a point I never made and now have continued that argument.

Why players leave or stay is based on more than just the coach, but I agree it is positive and JL should get some credit for that.

Now, do you want to address the other 4 points I made?

Selection was a disaster for long stretches of the season. It is obvious that Jackson gets worn down playing first ruck. He might be able to do it effectively one off against the right opposition, but more than that and it is detrimental. Tabs in was also foolish, he has been finished for a couple of years now. And how the hell we think Voss is a better option than a legit ruck playing wafl is beyond me.

It must improve this year.

first year since 2016 that this was the case (arguable exception of 2020 considering the club got fed up with hogan but still)

I share your thought that we should be looking at a top 6 finish at a minimum, based on the quality of our list.

But in the situation where we finish 7th or 8th, i can’t see the board jettisoning JL after having made finals.

Genuine question, has a coach ever been sacked at the end of a finals season?

There has been a couple I can think of... Both at the saints.

Thompson left cats end of 2010, was he pushed or did he jump? Official line was he jumped but who really knows other than inner sanctum at the cats.

I remember this Mark Bomber Thompson walked out at the end of 2010. He was burnt out apparently.

Cats have a history with that, Malcolm Blight's last game he coached for Geelong was a Grand Final loss, but wad he sacked or did he resign?

Only recent coach I can think of that was sacked after making finals was Grant Thomas

Maclcolm Blight wasnt sacked, he resigned and Walked out.

I can only think of 2 coaches that got sacked despite making finals. Grant thomas at the end of 2006 despite gettig finals in 2004-06.

And Stan Alves at the end of 1998 despite getting the saints to a Grand final in 1997 and finals in 1998.

well if the dockers dont make finals in 2025, there will be a price to pay.

I still remember at the end of 2006 dockers made a prelim final. Traded in Chris Tarrant. Chris Connolly was gone half way into next season. Vintage , I look at your avatar pick. Scott Thorton and Lindsay thomas. That pick was the game of Chris Connollys last game as dockers coach.

Good list we got.

But we always have a chance of missing out on finals in 2025. We could have a horrible draw again.

I'm predicting a good draw. We're guaranteed a double up against WC who will be bottom 3 then I'm guessing we'll play either Richmond or NM twice and an off Broadway game at gather round against a lower ranked team. Possibly the Saints.

Think we'll get a couple of Thursday/Friday night games too.

I think freo in 2025 are good enough to make finals.

Top 4 is a bit of a stretch.

gotta get at least 15 or 16 wins minimum for top 4.

I can see freo in 2025 get 5th to 8th at best

We were 3rd this year with a month to play. A lot depends on our key players staying fit but top 4 is definitely the goal.

If we get 13 games at Optus then 11 wins should be the goal then we only need to win every 2nd away game for top 4.

Our tactics and consistency improving in last quarters means we make top four in 2024. Injuries didn’t help but weren’t the reason we lost those games.

I haven’t mentioned JL yet as a of lot that comes down to our senior players not performing when things got tough but shutting up shop with fifteen minutes to go and two goals up didn’t really help. It’s a team effort across the coaching staff and players to get better in these situations even if it’ll be JL that ultimately pays the price if things don’t improve.

Not having those injuries to key players late in the season and/or having Bolton in the side only helps us put an extra goal or two on the board prior to our game plan falling to pieces in the last quarter IMO. It perhaps wins us one or two of those games but the overall problem still exists.
