You want to believe, but this club looks for big name players to sell excitement.
Instead of focusing on bringing the best talented coaches to the club.
You can’t tell me Mitchell is better than JOM? Pies also bought in McStay.
So the drive is from within, and when you look at guys like Leppitsch and Bolton
as assistant coaches it just highlights the load on JLo’s shoulders.
It’s exactly what they did with M Harvey, and then let Lyon do the hiring after
Kirk had bolted.
This club is going nowhere until this changes and we have Elite talent off the
field. Instead all you ever hear is the big contracts to the player that will change
our fortunes.
How can a guy like Hogan be so ordinary with us, and then the opposite with
GWS?
Obviously didn’t pass the DH policy, but would the Bulls win without Rodman?
I love it when people being up the Chicago bulls. I loved their 1991-93 side.

I am an Orlando Magic fan and my favourite player of all time at Orlando played in the 1991-93 bulls championship sides. Then played for the magic from 1994-99. Goes to Seattle for 1 season. Then plays for that awesome 2001 LA Lakers championship side.

He wore number 54 and was a solid power forward. Wore those white Goggle's too. His name is Horace Grant. That bloke averaged 13 points a game and 9 rebounds a game in his career.

He was solid but no way stats wise Horace Grant was as good as the other legendary power forwards of the 1990s like Karl Malone or Charles Barkley. Both of those blokes would average 25-30 points a game easily and 10 rebounds a game.

I still remember Charles Barkley best ever game in his career: Game 7 of the western conference finals vs Seattle against another good power forward in Shawn Kemp. Barkley got 44 points and 24 rebounds to help the Phoenix suns make the 1993 NBA Finals.

Dennis Rodman was a power forward but a defensive one. Bloke would average 5 points a game and 15-20 rebounds a game.

He didn't need to score. Jordan, Pippen, Toni Kokuc, Steve Kerr and Ron Harper knew how to score.

Oh for ****s sake....

Really?

I mean really??

What goddamn benefit is threads like this to anybody? Especially now? How in God's name is a response like this currently justified?

Pardon me for saying it, but threads like this present more like displaced anger, or irrational fear, or wounded trauma response more than a mere hypothetical.

I truly hate to be critical of fellow Freo fans, but come on! Just two losses and we're turning to water???

Threads like this are actively destructive to common purpose.

FFS ... Get a grip.

Yes....and no....

These three games would've been pencilled in as wins before we started the year?

We're acknowledged as having quite a hard draw this year.

Going 0-3 is not death knell, but I can hear the knives being sharpened out back.

Next 7 games after the Derby:

Adelaide: Possible win away
Gold Coast: Possible win away
Bulldogs: doubtful win at home
Brisbane: loss away
Hawthorn: win home
Sydney: loss away
Geelong Loss home

Given the way we're playing if that carries on for the next 7 games. I could see at best 4 wins 6 losses.
And given the way we're playing if that keeps up it's possible we win less than that.

I want to see an improved game style, and more goals.

If we win less than 4 out of the first ten and we are still playing this shite game style, he's in massive trouble

Going 0-2 isn't the main problem itself it's how it happened and against who it has been. Going 0-3 the same way against ordinary opposition and even people like me will be asking big, big questions.
It’s a must win Today, otherwise we are missing the 8.
Other teams just seem hungrier for the contest.

Agreed. If we’d lost by a total of 16 points to Geelong and Collingwood and played a good style of footy I’d be sanguine.

We’ve lost to two bottom 9 teams one of whom was missing half their best 22 and played zero good footy.

It’s been horrible

Even last year when we were 1-1 and scraped that 1 pt win against adelaide, at least we played some really good enjoyable football for the first half of that game. There has been absolutely nothing to get excited about this year. Not a single period of 5+ mins where we actually looked damaging.

That to me is the greater concern. It’s not that we’re losing, it’s that the team isn’t gelling.

Point taken, but I would argue that St Kilda under Ross Lyon are hardly ordinary opposition.

First of all, they're currently top of the table, above even Collingwood on percentage -- think about that for a moment, given the personnel they have.

Secondly, assuming St Kilda under Ross would be crap this year, based purely on last year's performances when Ross wasn't coaching them, is in my view a rather misguided assumption... especially given the way he turned Freo's fortunes around quick smart, despite nobody giving us a shot at all at he time (our list at the time - a few obvious individuals aside - was nothing to write home about either).

Ross did not get his reputation, or his 53% career winning percentile score, in a Weeties packet -- it's never wise to underestimate him.

Thirdly, I argue similar(ish) propositions can be made over North Melbourne. They were bog-ordinary in previous years yes, but they drafted well last year, and Clarkson is no mug as a coach either.... how many coaches out there have a threepeat to their name? Or have won four premierships in five years? Nor is Clarkson the sort of coach/individual to allow half-arsed preparation, game plans, or individual performances to continue (especially given the scrutiny he's currently under).

Fourthly, we came within one truly shitty (but legal) call within winning that North game.... so where is this dialogue coming from that we are complete crap, that we can't win games, and that JLo can't coach to save his genitals?

Would devoted Freo fans (?) REALLY be publicly contemplating JL's pending replacement, if we had been awarded a free kick, and had won that game from it?

Personally I think not. The balance sheet would be 1 win & 1 loss, and while we would all certainly be supremely pissed at how we played in those games, we would also be collectively far more likely to cut JL some slack, and far less likely to be baying for blood.

We have lost opening matches before, and NOT shat the bed as a collective fan base.

Similarly we have also had bad starts to a season before, but NOT thrown out the baby with the bathwater.

I note LOTS of people on the boards are baying for JL's blood right now... but VERY FRIGGIN' FEW OF THEM are looking at the average age of our current leadership group, or the number of first-time leaders there currently are on it, or the amount of on-field leadership that has been on display during the last two games, or who are willing to point the fingers at the leadership group screaming for them all to be dropped, or sacked.

People aren't doing this, because to do so would be patently unfair... but all the criticism being levelled at JLo is equally unfair as well.

I think the Freo people - my people - whom are baying for Jlo's blood right now, need to take a collective chill pill, then have a really good look at the coaching credentials and prior successes of both Ross Lyon and Clarko, before they start screaming for the head of one of the most internally-respected coaches Freo has ever had.

TBH - I suspect half the reason so many BF folks are pissed right now, is because our pre-season draft boards this year became an absolute circle-jerk of over-enthused optimism.

Nobody was really willing to sound a serious note of caution, or comment on just how emotionally dangerous it can be as a fan to go into the season proper with hyped-up expectations and over-inflated team pride... that's despite the fact we've all done that sort of shit before, on numerous occasions, and all been emotionally bitten in the arse by it more than once (I include myself in that list as well... but I've also done it too many times though to be completely sucked in by our own hype)

So can we please everybody...

...PLEASE...

...can we all please have and display just one small ounce of collective realism on the Freo boards going forwards -- both in regards to our public comments (which we now know unequivocally ARE monitored by the club, and will reach the playing group in one form or another...) and also in our collective expectations of the team and the club as a whole.

My apologies for the dummy spit everyone -- ...but the amount of vitriol being spewed on these forums lately is completely beyond the pale.

I risk a holiday posting on here but...
Either Longmuir needs to go, or clean out your assistants, or get someone else in to create your game style plan (which Longmuir has to listen to). The way it is now you're good at keeping the opposition to a lowish score but don't score enough yourselves. If you're a pretty good side throughout the season that game plan will get you a finals spot and maybe top 4. When finals start though, the intensity goes up and sooner or later (semi/prelim/granny) you meet an opponent who also has a pretty good defense but can also score heavily, especially when momentum goes their way. I just don't see how Freo under their current game plan can score enough to go all the way, even though you've got a list that could.
