Jared Allen: A Cut Above
Anyone who has watched the Kansas City Chiefs in recent years will have no doubt noticed the significant impact, yet somewhat unfamiliar prescence, of young defensive end Jared Allen.
In his 4th season out of Idaho State University Allen has been the figurehead in re- building the Chiefs notriously weak defence since being drafted in the 4th round of the 2004 NFL Draft.
Standing at 6ft6 and weighing in at 265lbs, he is not the most gifted athlete, but what he does possess is a lion heart, a fierce determination to succeed, and a motor for days, all of which have allowed him to become (in my book anyway) one of the perrenial pass rushers of the National Football League.
Allen always seems to finds a way into the opposing backfield, plundering rush plays to the outisde with monotonous regularity and collapsing the pocket on his way to the quarterback on just about every down. His numbers only justify why he is considered by many to be the Chiefs most important player, a lofty mantle in the company of Larry Johnson.
Allen's Career Numbers:
189 tackles (163 solo)
35.5 sacks
19 pass deflections
1 interception
A plethora of forced fumbles (including 6 his rookie year)
9 multi- sack games (including against Vick, Brady and Brees)
Having battled away without much noteriety or surrounding talent, his performances are quite outstanding and given he was playing in a stronger defensive scheme, who knows the heights this guy could have reached already.
What can sometimes be an escaping factor is that defensive lineman, only put up good sack totals against weaker blockers and weaker QB's (Dwight Freeney). Not Allen, who has a proven ability to register success against any enemy.
Great player who deserves a mention, not my favourite player, but I wanted to get his name out there because this guy is very, very good.
