Should we do a snake draft for the first draft or traditional and just cop the good/bad luck?

(Snake draft for those that don’t know means if you get pick 1 your next pick will be the last pick of the next round, so 28. If you get pick 14 your next pick would be 15, the first of the next round).
snake for sure for the inaugural draft, at least imho

Just my ideas to help drive the conversation. Any thoughts or changes welcome. I’ve considered balance with the scoring but this isn’t a strength of mine so put forward your ideas or concerns.

Squad: 14 teams with 44 players
Positions: 22 on the field. 6 defenders, 5 mids, 1 ruck, 6 forwards and 4 utility’s. No captains scoring double
Draft: Snake initially then normal going forward
Scoring: categories.
Score 2
Disposals 2
Marks 1
Hit outs 2
Tackles 2
Clearances 2
Disposal efficiency 1
Contested marks 2
Spoils 1
Total 15 points

From standard rules combining kicks and handballs to disposals but weighting of 2.

Tackles changes momentum so weighted to 2.

Contested marks and marks both included. This rewards KPP more but still gives your outside players and HB some value. Meanwhile your full back or CHF gets 3 points per contested mark (as he also gets a point from a mark).

No free kick categories as these are really hard to build a list around and are very random. I suggest we keep to a standard 9 cats. Could do free kick
Differential if people wanted it.

Spoils help out the key defenders more but weighted at 1 point. Take a mark you putz.

Clearances at 2 as it’s a really important stat in AFL but 1 point might help keep balance across more positions.

Disposal efficiency at 1. Often the team with better disposal wins but not always.

15 points (want a odd number to limit draws) in total. Need 8 points to win.

Thoughts?

I like your thoughts on squad size, draft and scoring. All sound pretty good to me. Just on positions though, I think it may work better having only 5 defenders, but making 6 midfielder, keeping total on field the same at 22. In the existing leagues, we always seem to be scratching around for defenders while midfielder are a dime a dozen. Also, 1 emergency for each of the five positions to be named each week to cover for late withdrawals.

I think that's why adding categories like spoils and contested marks helps. Real AFL squads post 6 backs, 5 mids, 6 fwds, a ruck and 4 interchange. So I'd keep it as Wise Guy Sam said.

All I'd really change is still keep kicks and HBs as separate categories. Add some spice when teams have handball happy players.

Oh also I'd have score weighted more than others. Scores ultimately decide games. Don't think we should weight it as much as HO. In fact I'd probably put everything at 1 to make them all super important. And maybe score at 2 to help eliminate draws.

Maybe during multi bye rounds we can edit the lineup. Take 1 off each line
I do like this idea, as it would reduce the number of donuts for these rounds.
Also we need to decide on player pool swaps allowed. I don't mind on 0, 5, or 10 during the season, as long as there in some restriction. If there is no restriction, the obvious tactic would be to have say 15 or so key players named each week and then top up with players whose team are playing Richmond the following week.😁

I have never done weighted categories before, only standard so hard to comment without seeing it in action. Seems good on paper though.

I wonder if instead of having two mark categories, do standard marks and add score assists would open up the player pool a bit? Maybe bump up small forwards a bit more?

But I am happy with the consensus.

Not a fan of collapsing kicks, handballs into disposals. Also not sure about weighting contested marks like that, i get the making key positions relevant but not to this extreme. Mids and disposal pigs should still be important.

What about...

Goals & Behinds (SCORE) - 2

Goal Accuracy (G%) - 1

Kicks (KI) - 1

Handballs (HB) - 1

Marks (MA) 1

Hitouts (HO) 1

Tackles (TK) 1

Disposal Efficiency (D%) - 1

Contested Marks (CM) -1

Rebound 50s (R50) - 1

Spoils (SP) - 1

Just weighting score double every other cat and adding in contested marks means key fwds are relevant. Rebound 50s, spoils make key backs relevant.

(Can be edited for zims idea if we wanna weight them at 10 points per cat to get more realistic scores)

I like this, takes away the issues for when teams to stockpile rucks hey deeman87

I don't understand the idea of weighting at 10 per category, but the categories themselves look good.
