Traditional fitzroy jumper in melbourne....pld brisbane jumper at the gabba!! Never understood why this isn't the case......current jumper for perth SA games etc

Because we are the Brisbane Lions, not the Bears or Fitzroy solely.

I'm happy with our current setup with the home and Fitzroy-coloured Melbourne jumpers (I'm hoping for a gold bears-inspired clash) as well as wearing one Roy's and/or Bears jumper each year/every second year for the Hall of Fame events.

year, average home crowd.

2016 17569
2015 18810
2014 19743
2013 21082
2012 20343
2011 20461
2010 29933
2009 29172
2008 28127
2007 28847
2006 28629
2005 33266
2004 33619
2003 31717
2002 26894
2001 27637
2000 27406
1999 21890
1998 16674
1997 19550

is it only a coincidence that the lions average home crowd dropped by 9,500 the year the suns came into the competition? the most in any one year by a long way. if we continue in this way by the end of the year we may be averaging below the infamous 1998 year.
I have the same theory. Lions crowds are terrible and so are the Suns and there is no way that they are going to get a sellout unless they play someone like Collingwood or Carlton on a Friday night. Speaking of Friday night the lions have hosted a Friday night game since 2011.

For two reasons:
(1) AFL is a re-badged VFL and most Friday night games are schedules for Victoria.
(2) The AFL schedule comes out early than the NRL and you can guarantee that the NRL would schedule a blockbuster game for the Broncos that night.

Like they did when we played the Pies a few weeks ago. (Only that was a Saturday night)

Our boys (the Lions) absolutely stinking it up on the park was the double whammy.

The NRL needs to have a look at themselves. The afl doesn't play stupid games in Melbourne every Monday just so the storms crowds are even lower so why do they play the Broncos games when the lions play it's just stupid. #yourclubrepresent

The NRL would like Brisbane to be a one-sport town. It's our job to survive, preferably thrive, in spite of it.

It would be nice if the AFL recognised this but noticing reality might be a bit too much for them.

They recognised reality this season by giving us a horror draw.

Our 2014 draw was just as bad and from memory, 2015 wasn't anything to write home about either.

We get regularly buried early by the draw, in a market where the Broncos are undisputed kings.

Then we have to listen to Melbourne media types pontificating about our poor culture:

"The Lions shouldden get nuffin till they fix their kulcha. Anyway, stuff 'em, they won three premierships early this century, so they will have to just suffer indefinitely. Anyways, what about the Bulldogs and St Kilda ....eh !!!..........EH!!!.............no Flags since 1954 and 1966.....cry me a river Bears!!!!"

Seems to me we are getting smashed from all sides simultaneously

Honestly, sometimes I wonder how we still have 20,000 members

Lots of kids and parents get 3 game memberships for being registered to play junior afl. That's how. Real full member numbers would be considerably lower maybe as low as 5000.

I heard he was talking Merger?

Which I could see happening TBH. Eventually. GWS will be sustained by the biggest population base in Australia.

Issue I forsee is the Brisbane based fans or Fitzroy fans get burnt.

It's either the Brisbane Suns = no fitzroy and no lion.

Or the Goldcoast Lions = No Brisbane No Bears

Maybe the South East Queensland Lions Suns bears "I go for the SEQLSB"

Queensland Lions - based in Brisbane with token games in Cairns and Carrara

nah, they can just fold and we will take, sam may, rory thompson, tom lynch, jack martin, dion prestia, adam saad and jack bowes:) in a mini de expansion draft. the AFL can then stick their PP:cool:.

I shouldn't be joking given our current predicament and Fitzroy's past (we are the team most likely to go under at the moment if the AFL were insane and let it happen), but we could give the same type of offer Collingwood gave Fitzroy in the mid '90's. Others might know the exact details but I thought it (the Collingwood merger offer) was something along the lines of Collingwood keeping their name, Magpies logo, and colours, but generously offering to let the reserves team play under the Fitzroy name / jumpers; with a token offer of having a lion emblem on the seniors shorts.

I don't think it ever became an official offer, but I am pretty sure it was floated by Alain MCallister (then Collingwood President) and was definitely on the back page of the Herald Sun at the time.

Herald Sun basically ran a "merger of the week" series in the early/mid 90s... it was crazy.
Even a Collingwood/Richmond merger was mooted at one point.

Lethal could end up being right.

Josh Caddy, Harley Bennell, Charlie Dixon, Zac Smith, Jaegar Omeara, Dion Prestia out the door and talk of David Swallow going as well.

He'll be fully franked when the Suns can't get quality players to move there to take their place. They'll have all these draft picks that they'll have to use on kids and not trades, rinse, repeat.
...sounds like a familiar story. At least we figured it out earlier and got a head start on trying to sign any QLD talent available.

Where is the talk about David Swallow wanting to leave? Haven't heard that one.

All 3 were bound to leaving IMO and as much as it is hard to do I truly feel for the supporters down the road. It's laughable and also worrying at the same time the reaction from Head Office. Growing up on the Gold Coast it was like a turnstile of national sporting teams trying to get a foothold and it just shows the ridiculous planning from the AFL. They don't have any idea of the sporting playing field that is the GC. There was a very big reason why the Bears moved to Brisbane when they did. It reminds me the shiny toy (GC) one gets for Xmas and then when the Bday rolls around they forget about that one cause they get a new one (GWS).

The are fickle (may be more so than Brisbane) and the will all jump on the Titans bandwagon who are putting together a very competitive team. Bad time for the suns but for me I don't care as they are just another club.

The sad thing is in that analogy the Lions are the toy from 10 years ago. An old beaten up teddy bear replaced by a skateboard, and then by an Xbox.
