Leigh Matthews: the most Anti Hawks Commentator on TV?

Watch a replay (as hard as it may be) of Leigh's outburst just as Dale Thomas is about to lay a tackle on Cyril in the dying moments of the 2011 prelim and then tell me he's anti-Hawthorn

I do think his comments are are anti-Hawthorn, which does not mean he is. He overcompensates to appear neutral. He should not have said Sammy was exaggerating the snipe form Johnson, that was an elbow at speed into the kidney. Those who say he was exaggerating it obviously have not been hit like that. (note Lethal was considerably tougher than most but that doesn't mean Sammy is not) plus note how he helped SJ get off with a fine. As for the third man up, I don't know what the rule is, but if there is no rule against it, Lewis is entitled to do it, and he does it well. I am glad they have a rule against blocking, as the Cats use it all the time. Pity Spang didn't get a free in the last seconds of the GF for McGlynn's block. That would have been perfect. To continue this rambling digression, I really enjoyed the game on Monday, well worth the trip over. PS Lewis is quite good.

Yeah, I mean, lethal had the momentum to take out a goalpost, I think pound-for-pound, Mitchell takes a high percentage of the punishment Lethal did. And generally he just gets on with it.

OP is a sook, this thread doesn't make any sense at all. Have a listen to the commentary again. And please, try and stay rational this time.

Think that's a bit harsh, but easy to do via a keyboard and on the internet. Not sure your missus thought I was a sook, but no problems if you want to play the man and not just have an opinion on the topic of the post.

The OP, while quoting from that game, was about Leigh commentating on all Hawks games. But hey, feel free to reply again and "try and stay rational this time"

Haven't you just made his point by sooking up again?

By the way, anyone who wins as many B&Fs at the HFC as Lethal did can say whatever he dam well pleases.

Ok Miffy, let me respond to your examples. 1) blocking the 3rd man up: every radio commentary similarly went on about this rule, because it's a bit weird, it worked in our favour so that was great, but it still doesn't mean it's a particularly just rule. 2) the Mitchell bump: Leigh was in the middle of talking about something else, and simply wanted to keep talking about that, and so quickly dismissed the severity of the bump, it wasn't an attack on Mitchell, simply an old man, ignoring something while he's talking about something else.

And when i said please stay rational, if you had an honest re-listen to the game, you would notice that Leigh praised the hawks over and over again. He did the Dunstall type thing, of not talking them up too much, not wishing to appear biased, but the Hawks smashed the cats (so sweet!) and so there was a lot to praise.

I thought that you might just be trying to find something to complain about frankly. And unfairly besmirched Leigh.

(Just watched the port/freo game, can someone please ask Gerard never to talk about Xav Clark again!)

Wasn't sooking it up at all, he played the man not the ball and I said as much.

OK, fair enough, we'll agree we have different opinions on the commentary. Yes, I stand by that I was complaining about his commentary being biased, but it's just my opinion, and I'm always protective of my team, regardless of the commentator. I would've posted the same if it was anyone else that I reckon does it a lot in Hawks games. In my opinion, it happens to be Leigh who is a Hawk legend, but just my opinion, which differs from half the people in the thread, the other half agree (and have called out Jason as well, but I don't always agree on that one, but hey, there's another different opinion)

Like I did say, listen to his commentary compared to the others and compared to how he picks on the hawks. Second half highlights included that we were 'showboating' and that we're 'peaking too early, the Hawks should've been happier with a 4 or 5 goal win'

And what I didn't say was he hasn't given anything to the club, but something's been up since he went to the Lions and he's never been as affectionate to the Hawks since.

Leigh was right!

Leigh Matthews doesn't have an emotional bone in his body, He has openly stated he shares no emotional tie with hawthorn. He also shares no emotional tie with collingwood. I guess thhat leaves brisbane, but the man can like what he likes. It's a shame he has no tie with the club. He neither likes nor hates us.

Yees he went on the always hawthorn thing because he was asked to. He has stated many times, he has no emotional bond with hawthorn and no anti-hawthorn bias either.

He was given his jumper recently from the 76 gf by a fan, and he said something like "yeah I played in that game, now it's in the past and we move on, I think this could go in the hawtorn museum."

But I don't think he's antihawthorn, just not pro.

Then there's this from the Essendon* game.

Commetti: "just find yourself barracking dont you"; Leigh: "yeah you do"

In a really good place. BTW, the AFL website said it was Hodgey's 250th game today, but I thought he played his 250th in the 2014 GF. Can anyone shed some light on this?

I've noticed for the round 2 teams that anyone who debuted in Round 1 it said played 1st game, or played 150th. They may be using it as past tense.

Played 250th (game before being GF)

Anyone read the Dermie article in the Sun this morning on Lachie Neale? Probably the most informative and well written piece of the year, Dermie really is an intelligent man and lacks the cred he deserves.
