If I'm being honest I wanted to keep him over Will Kelly but I don't think he has set the VFL on fire at Carlton. He clearly has limitations and looks very one dimensional. Good luck with his opportunity. Hope he makes it.
The Kelly or McMahon thing is a furphy anyway. That year we left a spot open for SSP and added Steene. Could have kept both Kelly and McMahon if we were interested in keeping McMahon. It wasn't a choice between the 2. We just didn't rate McMahon. He was in a batch of delistings straight after the season finished. Not one we made axlate decision on. I wouldn't have re-signed Kelly either, but it's not related to delisting McMahon.

I get what you are saying and you are right you can always choose to keep any player you like on your list and delist anyone out of contract or even two players like Kelly and McMahon. We chose to keep Kelly and not McMahon. At the time my preference was to delist Kelly and give McMahon another year.
Was there a toss up between the two? We probably will never know. But with the info available you can't say for sure there wasn't a toss up between these two players.

I think you can pretty confident.

We do two rounds of delisting/re-signing. One before and one after trade week. It was Kelly and Madge unsigned - waiting to see what happened in trade week and hoping for a contract.

Kelly was always going to be preferred. Had a better VFL year than McMahon in 2022. Even in 2023. Even managed a couple of senior games. Maybe McMahon should have been given more time forward given that’s what he was recruited as, but so was Kelly, and he played his most consistent footy on a wing in 2023.

I’m not sure why the angst. I don’t see either haunting us any time soon.

Guess both Sucked then

Still Shocked we De-Listed him before Will Kelly

There is a lot that goes into deciding whether to retain or let a player go that we just don’t see.

Ability to follow instructions onfield, on the training track or in the gym, instructions when in rehab.

Attitude.

Buying into club culture. Supporting / not supporting team-mates.

Off-field behaviour and antics. A club CEO once mentioned that his Monday morning task was taking all the calls from venues complaining about the antics that players got up to over the weekend.

The only thing I get a little surprised about is when players who haven’t solidified their place in the team after four years get given a fifth year. (eg: Gault, Kelly). Has there ever been an example of a player needing five years to get going?

(I am really hoping that Fin Macrae is the first)

Reef is in the same boat as Finn in terms of it being his 5th year.

Nathan Murphy is the poster child for the 5th year crew. I suspect he's the lone figure on the poster.

Josh Thomas not far behind Murph. Forth season debut.

Surely there are some rucks that would be on that list?

Murphy had some long-term injuries though, right? Reef and Fin have both been relatively healthy

Murph’s fractured jaw is the only longer term injury I can recall. Rest were relatively minor in terms of time out of the game. Both McInnes and Macrae have had similarly disrupted runs. McInnes with a broken bone in his first or second season, Macrae with his back injury.

Are we talking about Nathan Murphy? The guy missed like an entire season with a neck injury?
