Coach Lions - Has the Fagan era already peaked?

Malthouse on ABC radio commentary after the Thursday night game that Brisbane were pretenders and not to be taken seriously. I wrote it off as him being bitter about 2002 and 2003 but it appears he might be correct. What is their deficiency?

Danniher has been terrible for their culture, they were building nicely before he came

Neale is just a better version of Tom Mitchell, the opposition is happy for him to get 40 posessions. He would be amazng in a star packed midfield like the Lions 3 peat team, Eagles 2005, Geelong 2007 etc. But as the main guy he will never be enough

Chris Fagan

Fagan has clearly hit his ceiling. Refuses to drop some players, irrespective of form - McStay, Lyons, Adams, Answerth are walk up starts for games no matter how poorly they perform. At the same time he drops Fort, Prior, Ah Chee and Robertson in a heartbeat and ignores form in the Reserves comp. Simply not ruthless enough at times and at others drinking too much of his own bath water. I suspect he and the football department are in a feedback loop.

Consequence - sadly the Lions are mentally fragile down hill skiers. Flat track bullies who don’t turn up for big games and seldom have what you might call a “character win”.

They need a coach with a fresh set of eyes, ears and a more ruthless attitude. After Brisbane were humiliated against Melbourne, Fagan rocks up to his presser and talks about giving the players a mulligan. Seriously! David Parkin would have given them a flogging!

Plenty of folk had Lions as flag favourites (before last night).

Currently in 3rd so that says "contender" but when it matters they just cant cut it. Why is this?

2020 Prelim Final - GABBA - 40 point loss to Cats
2021 - Qualifying Final - AO - 33 point loss to Demons
2021 - Semi Final - GABBA - 1 point loss to Dogs
2022 Rd 15 - Round - MCG - 64 point loss to Demons

Last night could have been 100 point loss (16.21 to 7.11)
Why stop at 2020? Straight sets losses at home in 2019, including a thrashing against us (who can't play away from the mcg apparently)

Bullshit. They were choking big games years before he arrived

Brisbanes issue is their defense; they aren't great defensively across the ground. They are great at kicking big scores, their forward line is potent, but they also seem to leak goals, especially if the opposition team gets on top of them. Out of the rest of the top 4, their points against is the worst by a long way, and generally speaking, a team needs a strong defense to win the flag (I am sure there are exceptions, but generally). Its not even really a backline problem, but across the ground.

Would be the perfect list for Clarko to take over but can't see that happening.

You kind of wonder how long they stick with Fagan now.

Its rare to get rid of a coach who is taking teams to finals consistently. I know the Saints did it with Grant Thomas, but that is pretty rare. Its the same argument people have with Geelong, and why they won't replace Chris Scott. There is no guarantee the new coach will do any better, and they could even do worst.

if brisbane bomb out in finals again, which I think will happen for the reasons described, maybe if Clarkson made himself available, but he doesn't seem like the sort of person who would stab a friend in the back like that. maybe he would, I don't know him personally.

Scott very almost won it in 2020. If it wasn't for Martin he wins it. So that's pretty recent. Now you can win in 2022.

Fagan hasn't even got close and doesn't look close.

Pretenders. Won't be there again this year when it really counts.

Let's not forget they got into the top 4 last year by being gifted an extra 5 minutes due to a 'home town time keeping error' in round 23.

Either way it'll be glorious to see them fail again in finals.

Talk about exaggeration, if you're going to bag us at least get the facts right, it was an extra 25 seconds not 5 minutes

Had nothing to do with the fact that your team lost their last 3 games...

Didn't you lose to Essendon recently too, and you didn't lose half your team to covid.
?

We aren't contenders and nobody thinks we are. Not the media, not the bookies and not swans supporters.

What a childish post. Can't stand people who say "but what about this". Are you 8?

This is a thread on why Brisbane appear to be contenders but actually aren't.

It's a legitimate question and a legitimate main board thread and discussion point.

What is their deficiency?
On paper they're pretty close. They're mentally weak though.
Could do with an A grade midfielder.

I think they'll be better once Dickhead Zorko Who Cheats On His Wife is out of the team. Can't be good for your "culture" having that jerk as your captain.
"Fish Rots At The Head!"

Need to hear more about this.

Not seen this on the scandal and rumour thread...

The media in Melbourne do think you are, SEN and the Age footy podcast are very complimentary of you regularly.

You have a bit of what the Dons get at the beginning of every season.

As for Brisbane, they are just pea hearted. The softest club getting around by a mile, all the talent and no drive.

They say we have good youngsters. Not that we are current day contenders.

Anyway. Can we stay on topic.
It's a perfectly legitimate question and thread for discussion.
Who I go for is irrelevant.

Bigfooty is so conservative.

These footy players who marry their childhood sweethearts when they are 24.
It's too young.
It rarely lasts.
It happens all the time.

Most had Lions as Premiers or Runners Up

Yeah I dunno why you'd waste your 20's on kids when you're an elite athlete drowning in cash and women but that's slightly off topic I think :)

Anyway aside from Zorko "ruining his kids lives" he's a petulant little flog.
Refusing to shake Touk's hand after a game after being smashed by him and then laughing in his face after the game in a rematch.
Yeah well done Dayne! Your child hates you and you beat Gold Coast Suns, whooo hooooo!

Enjoying drinking champagne from your Q-Cup mate, because you're not getting close to a premiership cup!
