With Geelong out of the race, the Brisbane Lions retain the recognition of being the last ever club to successfully defend a premiership.

Amongst all the doom and gloom, at least you can keep this one alive for another year. :)

I have to admit, this little stat is the one I've been more concerned about, than an actual finals berth.

With Collingwood destroying Geelong last night it is now beyond a doubt that the Lions side from the beginning of the century remains the best team of the AFL era. Geelong have been great, but missed their chance to claim the title when they lost to Hawthorn in the GF in 2008. Now bowing out without reaching the GF in the 4th year ends any possible arguements about which is the better side.
It really highlights how hard it is to keep the team up running and fit for such an extended period, anTd again displays how awesome the Lions feats are. Will be interesting to see if the cats now slide or stay thereabouts over the next few years. My prediction - next year will be alright, but after that it will get tough. Sure they get some salary cap relief with Ablett leaving, but once they stop winning GF's those players who are being underpaid no longer have a reason to stick around when they could be getting more money elsewhere.

Who's the tip for the next team to dominate for a period? It could be Collingwood - although I've still got hopes St Kilda can crush their hopes next week, and with their decision to get rid of Malthouse it could be difficult to maintain ongoing domination.
There's a pretty good case for GC being awesome in a few years, but they'll have to share the spoils with GWS who will have an equally well cashed up side with a huge core of young players coming through together. It will be an interesting 5 years of football as a casual observer... less interesting for the diehard Lions faithful!

I still think it's worth mentioning Geelong have been a brilliant team for a long time. No Brisbane in their hayday of course ;)

Fair point. Arguments over the relative quality of the competition at the time aside, you can only beat the sides that show up. Geelong unquestionably dominated the individual seasons more than Brisbane did.

But it's the performance at the point end of the season that counts, and when some kid picks up an AFL history book in 2050 and browses through the list of premiership winners. Brisbane's three in a row is going to stand out a lot more than Geelong's two flags over 4 years.

I'm pretty sure someone posted a ladder for all the games played from 2000-2004, and IIRC Port Adelaide was ahead of Brisbane on total wins.

Season dominance is overrated in the short term. In 5-10 years time people will already be forgetting whether Geelong won 1 or 2 premierships.

I sure as hell don't remember Port being that good in the early 00's, who cares about minor premierships!

Brisbane 01-02-03-04 > Geelong 07-08-09-10

Yup, my point exactly.

Wow, amazing:cool:

I'd really like to say it seemed like only yesterday.

But it's really starting to feel like a while ago now.:(

*Sigh*

Or maybe I'm just getting old.

Never mind.....that 3-peat DVD still cheers me up .....now where did it get to?

For some reason, ive been watching it alot recently.
What a champion team!!

I ask this question every year:

What do Essendon, Port Adelaide, Sydney, West Coast, Geelong and Hawthorn have in common?

They're living proof of how special going back-to-back.....to-back is!

Spot on with this quote. If you finish 8th with 11 wins vs 1st with 20 wins, unless you win the flag, you finished in the same spot, which is "not the premiers". Over time, no one cares about where you finish on the ladder, or how many games you won, they just care that you won the premiership, and that is one thing that Brisbane were supreme at for 3 years there. And, I would think that no team in the near future will repeat what they did.

Brisbane is the only side that has mate. It would be a longer list than the one he posted.

But the above sides have won at least 1 flag this century;)

Not saying I agree with the list, just explaining the logic behind it:thumbsu:

Oh, I get it. So, it is all the clubs that have won a flag this century that haven't won back to back this century. Pretty selective from our little mate. It is so pointless, I kinda wish I hadn't have bothered to reply now.
