London 2012 - Opening Ceremony

Who the hell goes to these things? 3000 quid a ticket??I would rather watch - well, anything really. Some Olympic sports would be good.

I am not just saying Opening Ceremonies are pointless, I actually find them nauseatingly embarassing and painful to endure.

Oh, well, Off Button for me..............................

I joined the Olympic Club back in about 1997 for the Sydney games. I thought there might be a chance to get access to tickets. Think it cost me $180 and I got a mag every 3 months I think, and a couple of small things as well. I did get a ticket to the 2nd day of the canoeing finals ie the final day of events, about 3 weeks before the games. I also got a ticket to the 2nd of 3 rehersals for the opening ceremony with that canoe finals ticket. I reckon about 65,000 people attended the rehersal I went to, which was the Saturday night before and the last one was the Tuesday night and the opening ceremony was Friday 15th September. I think there was about 90,000 invited to the final rehersal.

I enjoy watching the opening ceremonies on TV, but I wasn't going to pay $1,382 for an A grade ticket which covered about 80-85% of the stadium. Other prices were $985, $505 and $105 ( which had a massive request in the ballot I think 600,000 requests) back in 1999. But I gotta say after watching the rehersal I did want to attend, but when I say that, my best chance was to go in the ballot for an A or B grade but I compared that to each night of an athletics, which was $165 x 7 nights + $465 for the final night with 9 finals, I wasn't going to enter the ballot missing out on athletics tickets but get an expensive ceremony ticket.

The closing ceremony tickets were the same prices and I think there were 3,000 un purchased tickets and SOCOG in the end gave them away to the volunteers. My mate who worked for SOCOG offered me his closing ceremony A grade ticket for about 2/3rds price, but I said no thanks.

Is there a rough schedule online anywhere? I just want to see the athletes enter and want to know what time that will be happening.

Have a feeling there will be no schedule anywhere though.

Probably a bit hard given the secrecy around it.

This report says the parade of nations will take 1hr 29 mins - so you could probably roughly work back from that.

It used to be quite common that a young, up-and-coming, but basically unknown athlete would do it - Ron Clarke in '56. I think it was Montreal who had the two young teenagers do it (I think one was French and one was English-speaking - strong rumours that afterwards they were so excited they went off and did what a pair of excited teenagers do).

Finland were the first to do the 'famous Old-timer' when Paavo Nuurmi ran out in '52. But there was always a bit of a mix between the 'Great past Athlete' and the 'Young Kids representing the Future and The Olympic Movement'. I think in Japan in 64, they chose a Hiroshima survivor.

Now, of course, it HAS to be a Major Celeb athlete - I heard Princess Anne rumoured today..........

PAUL MCCARTNEY!!!!!!!!!
I cant wait to see what amazing musicians the Brits roll out.

Paul McCartney, will Ringo be there too?

The Stones, Who, Zepplin, Floyd, Elton?

I've heard that Paul McCartney will be doing 'Come Together' with David Bowie which would be pretty awesome.

The Poms have no shortage of music legends they can call up, would be great to see some of them involved in it.

I quite enjoyed that episode of EMT. I think for the most part Eddie, when away from Collingwood games, does a good job.

Being in Australia, we have been lucky with regards to the Time Zone for Olympic Opening Ceremonies, we even had a day time opening ceremony in our lifetime (Seoul), and Atlanta was on in the evening which meant the Opening Ceremony was on first thing in the morning.

Only Athens and this one is undoable with regards to staying up and watching

This is not The World Cup or the Euro Championships, Champions League final! So it looks like I'll be sleeping through this one

British eh?
