Luke hodge - contract negotiations

HUTCHY just reported on footy show that luke hodge is still persisting on a 4 yr contract....and hawks only willing to offer 3 yr and perhaps hodge may be only willing to sign 1 year which will lead to a gold coast offer.

what is everyones thoughts here?

i heard abt this last week at the game and my initial thoughts (with the emotion of a 88 pt loss) was f%^k him, given his performance this yr why would you give him a nick holland contract when his performance was great last year but has not backed it up at all this year.

i think we should not budge!!!!

we need him, he is the spititual leader of the club, but 4 yrs is too big a risk and sets a huge precedent, esp given our performance issues in 2009.

he should accept 3, and we should offer no more!!

I will stand by my comment from a recent thread on the same topic.

Whilst hodge is a great player and has been good for the hawks, no one player is bigger than the club and therefore the club needs to stand firm, especially if it also involves a large pay increase. If they don't then it will open the flood gates and others will also start holding the club to ransom.

On the other hand if its about length of stay rather than $ value then give him the four years.

I dont know what to believe any more, why would he be chasing 4 years, and if so why wont they just give him 4 years is there some conflict between the club and hodge, i always thought hodge said before that he wants to play his career out at hawthorn.

could this be one of the reasons for our season, maybe there are few more players chasing more dollars or years.

i realy dont want to risk losing hodge so i say give him a year deal

The Hawks like 2 year deals but I guess with Hodge they could possibly stretch to 3 years.

Hodge will not be going anywhere.

In saying that his form and body this year may have dropped his asking price of $600k per year back to about 500k per year.

Still 500k a year equates to approx 10 grand a week and thats pretty nice splash for playing footy;)

Hutchy reckons he would get 800-900k a year with the Gold Coast.

Pretty ridiculous when you consider the Prime Minister of our country is on 380k a year.

Either trade him this year or offer him 1 year and then the GC17 have to compensate us, simple.
And some of those CG17 picks are going to be worth more than 1 player blowing our salary cap.

No 4 year deal, he’s been injured or lazy ever since he came to the club and only had 1 consistent season. Which was last year as a lose man in defence basically, is that the hallmark of an elite player?

Compare his best form over the past 3 years with other elite players, he doesn’t even come close!

He’s 25 now and he wants a deal until he’s 29 come of it.

I’d prefer to be able to keep Rioli, Buddy, Roughy, etc.

No more players thinking they can ransom the club

1 year contract would be the worse possible option apart from him standing out for a year.

At the end of 2010 GC can secure 1 uncontracted player from each club for no compensation.

I understand were Hodgey's coming from but am dismayed that he is holding the club to ransom for a deal that has the potential to split this playing group up as they too seek the best deal available.

I'm sure it will all work out fine in the end.

Probably just wants security, knowing that with his body (he has had injuries every year he has played) that he won't go much further than 30 years old. Had he played at a high level this year then I would say no problem. But as vice-captain and spiritual leader of the club he should be taking the 3 yr to set an example. Prove over the three years that you are worth another 2 after that Hodgey. Maybe if you set the standard you will be captain (and take them to another GF win)

Wrong!

The dictators are going to set up a committee that values what compensation a club should get for an uncontracted player, because GC17 get first crack means we don’t get the chance to trade. So we have to be compensated. (Check out the rules if you don't believe me.)

No doubt because we’re Hawthorn we won’t get what we should, that’s why this year is the right year to put him on the table.

I’d prefer to give Rioli 4 years than Hodge.

It's all headlines, guys.

It's reported by Scumbag Hutchinson, and people here believe it?

But please leave off bagging Hodgey for these garbage rumours.

Yet nothing compared to Ronaldo and Kaka who will each receive salaries of about $500k per week from Real Madrid, every week of the year.

We do get compensated but cantnegotiate the conditions of it. My understanding is that if Hodgey wanted to go and they were offering a early 2nd or first round draft pick for him, we wouldnt be able to ask for more.

I think we need to hold steadfast to our principles of only offering 2-3 contract extensions. In my mind its worth to our team than any player. That said I see Hodgeys perspective if his taking a significant pay cut to market value and feels like as remuneration he should at least get some security.

If we he went to the Gold Coast as an uncontracted player, GC would not have to give us anything at all, the AFL would award us a compensatory draft pick based on a secret formula they have.

The thing is, no matter what player it will only be ONE draft pick, you WON'T be able to use it until a later draft (so in effect you lose a player but can't replace them for a year or two) and I am pretty sure that I heard that the highest pick awarded will be after the first round.

So we could, in theory, lose Hodge, and get a single second round draft pick that we can't even use straight away.

Even if the AFL does hand out first round picks, it is still only a single pick, and Hodge is worth more than even pick 1.

Having said all of that, as much as Hodge is my favourite player, due to his constant injuries he is just about the last player at the club I would sign to a four year deal. Thanks to his injuries, and his inability to reach elite fitness levels when he is fit, his actual output as a player over several season is far below what we get from guys like Sewell and Mitchell, even if his peak is higher.

Yeah society has gone mad hasnt it.

Lets think about Australia and the fact that the average wage is about 50k tho and it does put things into perspective.

Playing sport at the elite level requires dedication and commitment and you are only in for a short time so I spose you need to be compensated for reaching the level but seriously think about what we are talking about here........half a million bucks a year for playing football:eek:

When you consider that some AFL players earn more than the most important person in Australia it really does make you think WTF is going on in this world.

Come on people get some perspective here.

What is the role of the player manager? To get the best deal for their client. Obviously Hodge's market rate in terms of dollars is above what he will recieve from Hawthorn, therefore as compensation the manager tries to get a longer term contract, can't see a problem with that at all.

It has to be a two way street just can't have the club say we will pay you less than what you can get elsewhere and we will also make the contract shorter than what you will get elsewhere and the manager saying where do we sign! Just doesn't work that way and neither should it.

They are called contract "negotiations" for a reason.

Those supporters that suggest he is 'not that good' and don't care if he left for GC are a joke. Hodge is a absolute warrior, champion and any club would love to have a player with a quarter of his heart playing for them.

Not really. He may well speak Mandarin, but he has no left foot.
