EUFA EURO 2024 - Group Stage ⚽ EPL 24/25 starts Aug 17
What made him stand out was a decision he made 12 months ago after he had just announced his retirement from the Brisbane Lions, a club he said he would always love. A surprise offer of a job as a playing coach for the league's new kids on the block, Greater Western Sydney, as well as a co-captaincy, was an opportunity too good to pass up.
Power said he had learnt a lot this year from GWS senior assistant Mark Williams and he praised his replacement Leon Cameron as being perfectly suited to the developing club. But despite the joy the Giants gave him, he said the Lions would forever hold the special football place in his heart.
He was a life-long Fitzroy Lions supporter, then a reluctant Brisbane Lion, and then an out-and-out Lions champion. And he will forever be one of the all-time great Lions.
A first-round draft pick in 1997 from Trinity Grammar via the Oakleigh Chargers, Luke Power put behind him chronic homesickness in his early days in Brisbane to become a cornerstone of the triple premiership sides in 2001-02-03. He played 282 games and kicked 226 goals for the club over 14 years from 1998-2011, and was a wonderfully consistent contributor as a prolific midfielder and goal-kicking forward. He averaged 21 possessions per game and finished top 5 in the club championship a phenomenal eight years in a row from 2003-2010.
A proud Life Member of the club, he won All-Australian selection in 2004 and was Lions co-captain in 2007-08 before joining the GWS Giants, where he was an inaugural co-captain, played his 300th AFL game and served as an assistant-coach before what will be a new role in list management next year.
Very much the thinking man’s footballer, always caring for others and the good of the game, he was a long-time Board member of the AFL Players’ Association and won the PA’s coveted Madden Medal in 2012 in recognition of his outstanding achievements on and off the field. At the time PA boss Matt Finnis described him as “one of the most impressive individuals in the game”.
Never a truer word was spoken. And now to his outstanding CV he adds membership of the Brisbane Lions Hall of Fame.
Also coaching in the AFL is Luke Power, a father to one girl, was a five-year assistant-coach at GWS and three-year High Performance Coach at the AFL Academy before going to Carlton as an assistant-coach in 2020 and is now Head of Development and VFL coach working alongside Voss.PLAYERCARDSTARTLuke Power
