Science/Environment Mars Colonisation

Great to hear that this is seriously being considered. I would love to see a permanent human colony on another world during my lifetime.

IT'S the biggest dead-end job ever.

NASA is looking for volunteers to fly to Mars - the snag is that you won't come back.
It is actively investigating the possibility of humans colonising worlds such as the Red Planet.
The settlers would be sent supplies from Earth but would go on the understanding that it would be too costly to bring them home.
NASA revealed that it had already received more than $1 million to commence work on the project at its Ames Research Centre in California.

I would volunteer for this:thumbsu:

No life, family and friends Nick?

As if you would consder leaving earth and everything we have to live on Mars with absolutley nothing with no people. Oh yeah sounds like fun lol

I would be assuming my partner could come with me.

You would be creating history, the first people to colonise another planet. What an adventure

I can see immediate problems with this..I think a much better option would be a regular series of voyages with optional return rather than no return.

They werre saying that they can send 20 colonists there with no return for the same cost as bringing just 4 home. I'm sure they will find 20 volunteers easily.

That said, who knows what the technology would be 20, 30, 40 years after you settled the planet. It might be that two-way trips are commonplace.

Why?

I guess thats the question.

Why colonise it? What is the philosophy?

Backup for when Earth gets demolished by a meteor again.

Now I feel like reading KSR's Mars Trilogy. One thing she probably didn't predict was the use of the Internet and how it will help the colonists. If they can get Internet access to Earth over on Mars then it's gonna feel a lot more like home.

I would go for .... tttwo wweeks

I heard that Labor were considering rolling out Fibre to it. And Tony Windsor said he "dudn't know much about the internet portals, but he'll back it in regardless of the 5.5 trillion $ cost".

I'd consider going if I was single. Now that I'm married I'd definitely accept. :p

new world... set up your own new laws? earth could hardly enforce anything. on the other hand, your suggested laws would probably end up as an extension of the USA via nasa.

lord of the flies?

i like my solitude as much as anyone but living on mars would send me insane.

I find this shit pretty damn cool.
Love space-related stuff.
It pains me that I'll be long dead before we make any serious inroads in traveling through our solar system.

This is still a long way off. Is the plan still to go to the moon and build a space station there over next couple of decades for a launching pad to mars. I roughly remeber G Bush saying something like that years ago. I dont keep up with space missions or long-term plans.

It remains to be seen if we even return to the moon within 15 years let alone colonise Mars.
