Demetriou made a joke of it and said they could keep the player. I always wondered what would happen if someone read the wrong number as the rules are clear.

The precedent is set now. If someone reads the number one pick out wrong next year, they get to do it again. It is certainly at that end of the draft where it matters. These guys just speed through the numbers, little wonder somebody eventually makes a mistake.

Well, if the next club had called out the correct number & player combination for the guy the Crows just `drafted' then I think this would go a bit further.

I think Melbourne forgot to list the club for pick 4 as well, which according to the rules means their pick is void.

Either enforce the rules or don't have them, it will make it impossible for them to enforce the rule in the future because of letting the errors go this year.

I believe SEN said that they did say it but the mike went off. I heard it on the radio as well and thought it a bit odd especially after fonzie had just gone through all the rules.

Well that's the issue really. Absolutely silly rule in the first place that you can miss out on a pick by quoting a wrong number. If they apply this in the future, this ruling will be used in seeking recompense.

Imagine Carlton getting one digit wrong in calling out Kreuzer's name and Andy saying, sorry Carlton, you lose a probable 10 year champion player now, because someone stumbled over his number. Then if he didn't say it, some club would protest that the rules weren't upheld.

It just seemed to be a joke today, not a hard and fast rule. They all made light of it.

No the OP is incorrect, passing on Ebert is what makes him tool of the draft.

Ha! I thinking the same thing. Rendell better bloody hope that Dangerfield is a star because I can't see him living this down if Ebert ends up the better player.

Oh, I agree with you 100% but imagine the injustice if in the future they decides to void a draft pick for some minor bullshit error.

If they never plan to enforce it is it just there to encourage people not to make mistakes? Is this biblical fear of god type of enforcement? I don't think it is necessary.

All the AFL need is to hire some kid to punch in the player number and the players name can come up in big writing on the board and AD can check the board with a glance before going to the next club. If the player names do not match he can just ask them to double check the player number/name. No need for Gestapo rules.

You would have to be on your toes to pick the mistake up and pretty cruel to do that. Especially with a lower pick, and not one of the real big guns.
