Geelong hold secret meeting with AFL superstar Matt Rowell as trade speculation ramps up​

Geelong have immediately set their sights on their next trade target, holding a secret meeting with Gold Coast’s former No.1 pick Matt Rowell.

7NEWS can reveal Rowell and his agent Tom Petroro sat down face-to-face with Cats coach Chris Scott and football boss Andrew Mackie at a private apartment in Melbourne’s bayside late last year.

The 23-year-old is among a host of star players due to fall out of contract at the end of 2025.

It’s understood there has been no movement on a deal to keep Rowell at the Suns beyond his current term, however he has previously spoken glowingly of his time with the club.

Part of the Cats’ pitch to Rowell is to make him their long-term inside midfield bull to complement the outside speed of Bailey Smith and Max Holmes.

Rowell also holds a close relationship with former Suns’ interim coach Steven King, who now oversees the Cats’ midfield brigade.
