I actually found it to be a pretty interesting insight into Simmo's thinking. When's the last time we had an inside-outside damaging mid who can run all day and accumulate possessions like that (albeit they don't come around very often)?

Shuey and Yeo both lean more towards being inside mids. Kelly is clearly better suited to being an attack-minded mid-forward. Gaff is a wing who was occasionally retro-fitted as an inside mid in an unsuccessful attempt to give our engine room some more running power.

What's frustrating is that Simmo seemed to do little to compensate for the lack of balance in our midfield and their various deficiencies. The closest we came is tasking Redden in 2018 with playing a dour, big-bodied defensive role to free up prime Shuey and Yeo to play more aggressively. Instead of finding similarly contest-focused mids to join that mix after the flag, we threw everything we had at TK. And we're still dealing with many of the same problems in 2025, albeit with a younger group who deserve much more leeway as they learn the ropes
