How many did we give away I wonder.

The Tigers in the NRL recently started only including financial memberships in their counts.
Numbers are lower but more factual.

Used to be that way in the AFL too until Covid.
I am not sure they're being given away quite in that sense. If kids are participating in long term footy programs that align to the club and become a member/chooses to become a member through the program then I have no issue if they're included as members as they're likely to remain members, eventually become paying members into adulthood. Chances are, they'll become lifelong members.

It's imperative kids from non-footy regions / backgrounds/households have a connection and engagement with the club (and regular attendance to games) and building friendships through their connection with footy if we're to see the growth/generational growth in fanbase. A person who doesn't have friendships that engage / watch footy regularly is more likely to eventually stop following once the footy program ends if they haven't got/ built up a friendship group that also follows or has an interest in Australian Rules.

What I would like to see is a breakdown of paying v participant memberships.
