I think teams have just figured out that playing a genuine big key defender on Langford is a better way to go. He might be too quick for them or beat them at ground level, but even though he's a good contested mark for his size, guys like Taylor or Collins aren't going to lose aerial one-on-ones against him.

Having said that, Langford spilt some marks against North that he would normally have taken, and we botched a couple of simple kicks to him on the lead last week that should have given him good shots (Durham had a bad one of these).

That’s why 2 rucks have been the go for Essendon. Having 2 genuine Key forward sized players means those guys can’t go to Langford

Jokes aside, love the life he’s breathed back into guys like Kelly, Hind and Cox who have been given roles and done the team thing each week. All 3 of those were questionable best 22 pre season. All looking solid contributors now.

Not sure. Menzies at half back worked, Ridley should've been freed up sooner (like at the start)... Think Voss had a bit more to work with tonight.
So when we changed our game plan we looked better? And we had to wait till the damage was done because why?

Had us primed and we look consistently competitive for the first time in a long time. Just a general lack of class and clutchness for him to work with - that will hopefully come with belief. Can't play Tsatas for a while though.

The parts moved, I don't think the plan changed? We try to maintain possession with short kicks, because we don't have true KP players ahead of the ball. The ball goes in wide and so we kick a lot of points.

It’s hard with the injuries we’ve had but after the bye (assuming a few return) it’s time to introduce a little more pressure at the selection table.

Perkins, 2MP and Stringer are 3 who haven’t done enough in recent weeks and need to feel some heat. Harsh on Stringer maybe but don’t feel he’s played to the level he can for a while now.

Will say that everyone looks tired and ready for the week off.

After the siren and during the blues song I checked out our coaches box. Brad was at the back of everyone just staring up at the monitors. I thought it was odd, the other coaches packing up their shit and Brad was looking like the game was still going.

After reading what Brad had to say about the match, I think maybe those monitors might've been showing the stats.

He’s got a really big layering problem in the middle of the ground.

At the start of the year the main guys were Merrett, Parish, Setterfield and Durham and the second wave was Caldwell, Perkins, Hobbs. Plus Draper as a genuine second ruck who at least throws his weight around. Stringer, Wright and Gresham stationed permanently deeper forward.

Now it’s Merrett, Durham and Caldwell as the first wave and Perkins, Stringer and Gresham as the second wave and no physical presence from the second ruck.

The midfield is weaker and it’s pinching the really good finishers out of the forward half.

He seems to have written Shiel off completely because he is the obvious guy to come in and be a permanent on baller for a while and allow the guys listed above to go back to being that second wave of rotations but even Tsatas, it’s a perfect time to get him on the ball for a full game and let him learn some stuff, even if he might not produce immediately.

Shiel is a really odd situation. He doesn’t seem to want to be here but he’s still running around in the VFL collecting his cheques

What else is he going to do? Jogging around in the VFL for a few hundred k staying fit without pushing too hard seems a decent stop gap until he can get a trade.

For all the talk that Brad loves older players, he doesn't seem to love Shiel.

We are starting to show a real habit of having players available with skills or form to play a role and totally neglecting selecting them in favour of "favourites" who are selected because of who they are and not what they bring to a position.
They are either moved out of their preferred position which impacts what they can do in the new position (Martin) for a lose lose.
Or they are not good enough, been moved past in one position and are "hidden" or trialled in the other position as a chance to stay in the team (Kelly).

Again last night he's getting credit for the Martin move, you don't get credit for playing a player in his natural position.

Why play Menzie when you have kids waiting to play that role?
If they are not good enough for a position, put them in the VFL and they can bolster that roster, and we can expose and learn more about the list.

Setters played and he was ok, but he's so heavily taped and not moving that well and does the injury again.
Didn't we learn this last year playing underdone or not right players? He even said he'd learnt from it after the giants and pies losses.

We are screaming out for bodies in the midfield - refuses to play shiel.
First round draft pick is so very obviously a developmental player at this point - plays him as sub, out of position.

FFS try and accentuate a players strengths, and give all players a shot. ATM there's a chosen few who are turned to to fix issues you have recruited for and there are a few players having their development slaughtered

For as many good things that have been changed at this club there are some not so good ones being exhibited.

To be fair to Scott, Shiel has been underwhelming in the VFL. He should be ripping it apart.

Also, had a chance as sub and offered zero.

He looks like he’s jogging around at 50% effort in the VFL, doesn’t seem like a guy who’s looking to force his way back in to the AFL side, maybe Brad has said he’s not going to get a game?

Maybe.

Do we bite the bullet against West Coast and bring him in for a full game in place of Setters who most likely injured?

Menzie is not that old to be fair.

What’s shiel being doing in the vfl though, has he had a game where he’s out and out dominated like he should be able to with ease. He’s been running around like he just doesn’t care, so why should he deserve to come in. Yesterday 18 touches 1 tackle

Proves my point

First up . Shiel was not as good as Setterfield last week and he has not exactly been doing a lot in the VFL . He has checked out . Who says he would be any better on a wing. He is not in the long term plan. He would already be gone if the Saints didn’t blink .

Second. Why not try Menzie in a new role. It worked. Roberts has time on his hands. He is still under developed body wise and they have been working on his defensive running.
Now they get an idea of what a 21 year old Menzie can do in a different role.

There is really only Bryan you could mak a serious case around getting a decent go based on form .

Part of the development of the list is pushing players to other spots and second year in Scott does need to look at all areas of the list.
