Have no issue with Shiel going onball

Plenty of lesser mids as subs gone onball from other coaches. Really an experienced explosive mid as the sub should have an impact

He seems to really battle after time off. Maybe needs VFL time more if he cant perform at the top level returning from injury

Well the issue was he had played a half of footy over 5 or so weeks and then was expected to be on the pace after sitting on the bench for 3/4 .

Yep. He's supposed to be a professional athlete. Wright had a longer layoff than that and kicked 5 goals. If we can't expect him to be on the pace when he's coming in fresh and the rest of the players are tired from slogging it out then delist.

Wright played against Carlton 😛

There was something that pricked my ears in his recent defense of Weideman and that was him saying he looks at the forward unit and how they work rather than the individual players. For me that was an alarm given I heard this from North supporters and from someone connected to one of the North players at the time he was there. They where critical of him just focusing on his " forward unit " as a whole and not the form of a few in his forward unit not being great while others where playing very well in the VFL. More than a few people where critical of him playing blokes out of form and highlighting the forward unit was playing well as a group.
If there was a common complaint amongst North fans it was a total blind spot in regards to the form of some players.

It's fair enough though, isn't it? I'm happy to hang Weideman for not being to execute basic skills properly and missing sitters. But the best way to get a score is having a group that works and creates space for each other. You don't want a guy turning selfish and playing for their own score sheet rather than the team. You end up with a guy who hangs out back and calls for it on top of his head when things aren't going well.

He is explosive and rugged but not an elite, natural ball handler. Maybe not even a natural footballer in the way of a Hobbs, Parish or Caldwell.

He needs time to work his way into good form / touch to be slick.

Wet night, fourth quarter, under pressure.. not ideal. Should have even given him 10 mins in the third to get the pace.

Maybe hes either VFL 22 or AFL 22 and never sub after what we saw

We were going so well thats why we were happy to hold off and no one was performing terribly that wouldnt change the structure a heap ie Weideman for Shiel would have

So many good things to say about this guy. First actual coach we have had since Sheedy. I think what excites me most though is the fact that we have such a young list and so many players just starting out in their career, and Scott can instil his ethos and playing culture while they're in their development stages. Much easier than trying to change the mindset of our senior players who have - to be quite brutal - never been coached properly, never had proper development at a club that resources it properly and have gotten away with playing AFL football for a lark and a great job opportunity to this point in their career.

Our 22 year olds and under being coached by Scott for the next 5+ years, having that ruthless and accountable ethos instilled in them is going to make EFC unrecognisable from the past 15 years. I hope for the sake of our more senior players that it can come while they're still here, or more to the point that they can buy in 100% AKA Merrett, but I am finally starting to be convinced that this is the real deal and we're actually going to become a decent football club again.*

seeing Carlton pump freo in Perth stings.

could be the difference between a home and away final for us........if we make it...

On the flip side, I always regarded Scott quite highly mainly because he had forward lines that pretty consistently worked with good spacing and got his forwards good looks despite not having any real out and out star power.

2013 for example they only kicked under 90 points 5 times and their go to forwards were Thomas, Petrie and Aaron Black.

Can it be a strength and a weakness?

It can . As long as you are winning. What it can do is cause issues for those players who are in much better form in the VFL but can not get a look in despite the player at AFL level being in poor form.

How bad would it look if we had a KPF ( not Voss ) kicking goals every week but Weid stays in ?

I guess it will depend on whether there's been any growth in his ability to communicate since his first go around with North.

FWIW I think they missed a trick not going to Voss coming off his 5 and 4 in consecutive weeks because Weideman was going ok but hadn't really found his place in the forward line, was a little bit clunky and getting in the way.

Now it's the opposite, Voss has been quiet and so has Weideman but at least he's been doing a better role at getting on his bike and drawing a man away from dangerous areas.

Essendon was desperately in need of a floor raising coach and that's exactly what Brad Scott is.

All we need right now is for him to build that world class football department he promised.

There'll come a time when Essendon will need Brad to manage and develop a ceiling raising coaching group. Is he capable of that, we'll find out in due course.

In the mean time, I'm just going to enjoy the tranquility of stability and what seems to look like a half-competent football club.

I certainly heard the same criticisms from North supporters and agree with this in theory, but in practice we really do have no player in the VFL showing they are capable of doing any better than Weideman is, so I think it's a moot point. If we ever do have someone knocking down the door at VFL level and Scott is still consistently backing Wied to plod along in the AFL then it'll be a discussion worth having
