However wasn't McAdam coming back to SANFL from the Amateurs, after a year of country footy ...where he said himself, all he could do was stand in the goal square

So Ryan had superior fitness & game continuity .....McAdam coming from the back of the field
Yes he has upside but Ryan was a true freak for 2 yrs on wafl only scared off by his rep off field

McAdam definitely has that upside you suggest

Glad we got Saunders, he can manage McAdam as he gains AFL fitness, If it was left up to Burton and Hass they would break him before he plays a game.

Rowie saw a lot of Willie Rioli in the state league

Says Macadam is above him but below Liam Ryan. Says Ryan has more tricks
Yeah that's probably about right, not that hes right about much. One thing Shane has in his favour is his workrate is higher and his defensive side is stronger.

Im sure Eddie will take him under his wing and get him up to speed quicker than if he wasnt there.

Betts will still command the best small defender which is what will help McAdam.

Have we lost a generational player in McGovern before or after the draft?

McGovern's starting very late to ever attain those heights...

I didn't say we lost a generational player. I said we haven't drafted one... yet. We lost a player that we are significantly better with, than with out, statistically. I don't recall us playing like a team with arguably the best forward lines in the AFL when Gov wasn't in the team. I personally don't see us getting close to a flag this year. I look at Sauce. And then Tex, Eddie and Sloane, who haven't been consistently good for a long time. And if that is a given, that we wont win a flag next year, then I am happy with the Gov trade.

But as much as I think on balance, our chances are very slim, I can see a scenario where if a number of ducks line up in a row it can happen. Tex, Eddie, Sloane, Brad Crouch, Smith, Matt Crouch all managing to get back to their best form of 2016/2017 and if Sauce can just break even, then I think we just might have a chance. Losing Gov just makes it that little bit less likely that we can do it, even with other things falling into place. It requires an additional level of performance to be reached by all our players to cover his loss as well.

That was a shit deal for us. No doubt about it unless McAdam turns into a gun, which is not probable by any means. I'd be happy if McGovern was uncontracted, but he wasn't and we paid overs for Gibbs for that reason. Bottom line is we were bent over to get Gibbs and then got bent over for Carlton to take McGovern. Disappointing trade from the AFC unless McAdam works out to be a gun player, which doesn't happen very often with mature age recruits. Of course we all remember the one's that do, but the hit rate isn't that great. Tim Kelly's happen once every ten years.

What happens if McAdam is just a above average but pick 13 helps us get 1 of Luloscious / Rankine or Rozee ?

For mine it feels light. But if the other party asks for a dollar you're not going to use, do you dig your heels in out of principle and let the deal fall over, or do you say yeah sure, if if you'll shake my hand now and call it a day?

The party we're appeasing is Sydney, not carlton. Sydney could well have said no and then carlton are back to the drawing board and the deal falls over again.

Just curious, how much is Gov being paid and what players on your list are paid a similar amount?

I have no idea...i don't recall any of our trusted ITK's mentioning his contract amount.

I've seen on here $750k constantly mentioned though? Where did that come from?

I remember Curnow and Cripps re-signed for $800k+ (starting next year)...Murphy and Doc might be on decent amounts but i can't imagine any others being paid any more than $600k. So McGov might be in our top 5 or so...obviously we have plenty of cash to spend and you have to pay extra to bring players in.

We allegedly offered Shiel 1-1.1 million.

That is highly unlikely and regardless you're talking as if first round draft picks are guaranteed to be quality AFL players. We've traded a guaranteed quality AFL key position player (which don't grow on trees) for pick 13 and a mature age recruit which may not even play AFL footy. Plus we gave away pick 40. It's just a shit deal unless McAdam would have went at pick 20ish, which he wouldn't have.

This is my genuine fear :'(

McGovern is no guarantee either , in fact he was going to be less of a guarantee (with us) going forward than pick 13 is , and pick 13 at least gives us a chance to bundle up

Having spoken to a couple of different AFL club sources it sounds like McAdam was likely to be gone at pick 30 if not before even though I prob had him closer to 40 but I have only seen a few games

So Conservatively the deal is pick 13 and pick 28 ish

For Gov and pick 40

Ps Colin Young said the club ( AFC) were happy to see Gov go ( just what I’ve been saying ) and Reid didn’t deny that in the interview ( or support it to be fair )

So - What would you have done ?

I can empathize when some players need to go home for compassionate or personal reasons, but ffs what shits me is when they start nominating which Club.

If Kelly at Geelong genuinely needs to go back home to WA, then Freo should be a viable option as well.

I disagree. If I really want to move somewhere, surely I can also choose where I work if I’m talented enough to have options?

It’s a fine deal. Not amazing, but certainly more in our favor than in Carlton’s. Hardly “bent over”.

McAdam has been talked about in the 20s but plenty in recent weeks. Reid put him in the 15-20 bracket. Even if you assume Reid is exaggerating he’s probably still 25-35ish in crows rating. Pick 13 gives us an extra crack at some great talent and our drafting team is very very good.

New talent that actually wants to play for us ( for now anyway !$

It just occurred to me, is there anything really stopping any player from getting a big 5 year contract and getting paid massively upfront and then leaving the Club in the last two years?

Worst case scenario is they sit out a year and become a deregistered FA after the year out?
Like Gibbs?
