who was that Port Melbourne key defender everyone wanted in the Pre season draft? did he end up getting picked up?

Ethan Phillips. Still hasn't been picked up but is getting plenty of interested again. Think he is averaging close to 10 marks per game in the VFL again this season.

North Adelaide's Noah Casalini and Subiaco teenager Robert Hansen Jnr have impressed over the opening rounds of their respective campaigns to be seen among the chasing pack of Mid-Season Draft prospects.

Casalini's 2023 season culminated with a six-goal haul against reigning premiers Norwood on Anzac Day, with the mobile 192cm forward quickly having an impact with the Roosters after signing with the South Australian side last November. The 21-year-old would claim the Sydney Premier competition's best and fairest award in 2022 after booting 35 goals from just 11 games.

After missing out on the draft last year, Hansen has proven to show no issue in taking the step toward senior football in the opening month of the WAFL, impressing as an agile small forward target.

"Guys like Noah Casalini from South Australia. He's moved over I believe from New South Wales. He came from the Northern Academy system there," Alvaro said.

"He's a forward, he won the best-afield medal in North Adelaide's Anzac Day game. He's certainly a pretty handy goalkicker.

"Another one is Robert Hansen Jnr. A really quick, ground-taking, line-breaking forward for Subiaco. He's a bit of a goalsneak too. He's put his name on the radar after being overlooked last year."

Speedster Hansen jnr has received interest from a number of clubs in the lead-up to the mid-season intake and has nominated on a longer-term (18-month) contract through to the end of 2024, while Buller has lodged a short-term (six months) nomination as the 22-year-old key forward aims to land a rookie spot.

“Noah is a forward with good athletic and aerial ability with a penetrating left foot kick.”

“Noah is a 192cm athletic marking forward with a booming left foot kick. Starting in the Sydney Academy as a junior, he left that program and played local football before returning and playing 4 games for GWS Giants VFL at the end of last season. Noah won the Sydney Premier league Best and fairest, only playing 11 games and kicking 35 goals. We are very excited to see what Noah can bring to the Roosters this season. Please welcome Noah to the Roosters.”

Mav any thoughts on this kid?

I for the life of me cannot understand why we wouldn’t do this. Or the best KPD in the state leagues.

With McKay not signed or potentially not in our best interests to keep. We absolutely should be picking the best KPD (most like for like with McKay) and getting him into our system. At worst he’s depth in an area we have no cover at best we have a ready made and most like for like replacement for McKay should he leave with a fast tracked intro into our club and systems.

Even if McKay doesn't leave - considering his propensity to injury -> it'd be remiss not to stockpile adequate cover.

It’s so obvious it’s stupid.

West Coast and Walyalup* (Fremantle) are among four AFL clubs to ask for Jack Buller’s GPS data as Claremont deal with unprecedented mid-season draft interest for the in-demand big man.

The West Australian understands the Eagles, who currently have pick one in the May 31 draft after getting thrashed by fellow cellar dweller Hawthorn in Tasmania on Sunday, Dockers, St Kilda and Geelong had requested data for the 199cm forward/ruck with five clubs all up interviewing him.

If we were going to take him, I’d say we would’ve done it in the MSD last year, but we seen Dawson as someone with higher upside due to his athletic profile.

I probably agree. But doesn't change the fact we need additional KPD on this list. (I'd suggest 2 - one as a ready made backup and one as a developing 18 year old).

If Phillips isn't the best KPD in the next tier down then so be it -> but we absolutely should be bringing one that we deem the best in.

l would rather we look at a KPF than defender.. outside of Larkey and CCJ we are a bit on the short side..Especially with Comben and Xerri injured..wouldnt mind looking at Jack Buller 199cm 99kg forward/ruck

Good point -> we're light on in both departments (key fwd and back) - ideally, we have two spots open and take one of each.
I simply think KPD is a more pressing need -> especially when considering McKay's contract situation. If you could get someone in (and it might be stretch, but be comfortable with the cover) then could be equally as comfortable not matching an offer on McKay => a first round compo pick for Ben is simply too good to pass up.

As I said earlier, pick best KPD (most like for like with McKay) - at best we have cover and backup in terms of injuries or him departing us and at worst we have depth.

Saw him two weeks ago. Didn't do much.

Just bumped into to one of his former team mates (who actually BFNMAAK) and they reckon he'll get picked up and hoped it would be us. Said he's still learning his craft but has a high ceiling. Reckons he's super electric to play alongside.

I don't think we're going to be going anywhere near those players putting 18 months on their head. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't clear the spot if there's nothing short term worth our while at 2. It may end up Lowson or bust (and by bust I mean no pick, not our usual MSD fare).
Lynch saying "Lowson the most dynamic player in the VFL".....why say/advertise that if we plan to pick him up? Sounds to me we passing on Lowson.

The only issue with your reasoning is you are assuming McKay will leaving but this wont happen before the MSD. We have Corr, Dawson and even Young to fill a spot on the backline with Logue to cover Bens spot. In the forward line we have nothing readily available plus we are looking at the MSD not next seasons draft. l suppose the wait and see approach will be needed here to see who and if North select a player...

Fair. Unless that's what we want them to think. But then again, maybe we know that they will think that is what we want them to think, so that is why we want them to think that?

I admire the Sam Lowson story but wonder if his footballing is getting a little overhyped?

Think he'll do well in an already strong side but plays as a small marking target much more often than a crumber.

Sounds a bit like Paul Curtis.

Given the slim pickings and our record with the MSD historically, I’m less worried about position and more concerned with them actually being able to play League football.

Building teams and culture, you have to reward the effort. You have to show pathways to success. Otherwise what’s the point, we might as well refer back to best practices in finance.
