I know we have the Best of 2010 thread but this is a slightly different concept. What band/song/artist/album did you get into this year that you hadnt previously? It doesnt have to be anything current, just what was a personal discovery this year for you, music wise.

For me, it would have to be Brand New. Prior to this year I had maybe three of their songs, thought they were good but didn't give it much thought. Then in early January suddenly realised just how good the song "Jesus" is. Bought "The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me" on a bit of a whim, and a few listens later had realised just how brilliant it was. The rest is all pretty logical, bought their other albums and they're now probably my favourite band.

What are everyone elses discoveries?

How would you rate K&E? Haven't bothered with it yet, but if it is decent, I will probably be more inclined to get it.

I really like it... a lot.

i've been playing it non stop for the past week. I know this is weird to say about what is essentially a mash up album but the song composition is fantastic and it's surprisingly mature and touching.

it's not the dj on steroids stuff you get with girl talk. all the songs are chop up and used to create a new beats and new music. even the rap lyrics are chopped until they're essentially just another layer of music.

one of my favourite songs off the album

Wish they would upload it to a hosting site or something. Wanted the FLAC, but it would take an age because downloading from their site sucks.

And btw, do you watch/listen to TND? ;)

My most played artist of 2010 would definitely be Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Finally gave them a listen very early on in the year, fairly much listened to them every day since. They are the very definition of an audial orgasm.

In terms of new albums and relatively new artists though, a great discovery would be Winterfylleth. Or even Vulture Industries.

Not a band but...

I was watching _Ladies and Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones_ on ABC2 last week when they start playing this song that I'd never heard before and was utterly fantastic: Dead Flowers. Mick and Keef singing in tandem was great but what made it was Mick Taylor's awesome guitar work. Geez that guy could play. Maybe they dropped it off their setlist because Ronnie just couldn't do it justice?

How the **** did I go the last 40 years without hearing this song? OK, I've never been the biggest Stones fan but I do own 5 or 6 of their studio albums and a couple of compilations. I've also seen them twice. Yet Dead Flowers has avoided my eardrums until now.

The National :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Picked up High Violet on a whim after reading nothing but good reviews, loved it and procedeed to pick up thier entire back catalogue, now in my top few bands.

yes I do.
I was going to ask you the same
Yeah. Remembered that quote about 'DJ on Steroids' and couldn't remember where I heard it, as I only skimmed through his review of it.

And I agree with your views. Much better than GirlTalk :thumbsu:

I've discovered Watain in 2010, great band, their album Lawless Darkness won me over. Also, I've just discovered a great band today from Russia of all places, Wine From Tears. Will be getting their 2009 album for sure. The Fading from Israel is another find this year, plus a few more that I cannot think of at this time.

Chinese Democracy.

I know it's been out since 2008 but being a staunch supporter of the "old" Guns N' Roses, I had never listened to it.

Went to their concert last week, heard a few songs live and finally accepted the current lineup as pretty kick arse.

As such for me personally, I discovered that Chinese Democracy is not the pile of shit I wrongly assumed it to be.

90s group, but 'A Tribe Called Quest' for me. They've opened my eyes up to how much I love good, alternative hip hop.

Just wish I saw them at Festival Hall during the year.

With you on Brand New.

Is that the Russian Funeral Doom Metal band? Another great band that I have discovered in 2010. :thumbsu:

Remembrance a French Funeral Doom Metal is another. Funeral Doom and Doom Metal are genres that I have been getting into lately.

I think so; got a bit of Drone influence too.

Will certainly feature high up in my end of year count.

Try Moonlight Mile. It's the following track on Sticky Fingers. While you're there try Can't You Hear Me Knocking from the same album for some more ataylor magic, and the Winter from Goats Head Soup.
