We took a long time to click but eventually we got our act together. Really struggled to finish off a lot of our work.

The full strength Pies would have really smashed us.

Pretty much exactly how I felt about tonight.

I had a real sinking feeling at half time. We looked very sloppy.

It felt like our tackling and defensive pressure really went up a notch in the third quarter, and that was the catalyst for improved efficiency all around the ground.

In that sense, it actually reminded me a lot of our win against Port Adelaide at AAMI last year. The whole team lifted once a few guys started putting their bodies on the line.

Anyway, I still feel Karnezis backs out of contests way too early.

Fortunately this rule will only be around for one more week and I think just our game next week.

No, it's a rule for the season proper, I'm afraid.

Haven't seen any vision yet but great result. Don't agree that we would necessarily have been smashed by a full strength Collingwood. Doesn't always happen that because better players are substituted in that the team performs quantitatively that much better. Anyway, as selected, we weren't fielding our best 22 either. I'm more interested in how our game is coming together and on that score it's all good for me.
Come on, Swan, Pendlebury, Ball, Thomas, Cloke, Reid, Shaw and that is just for starters.

May I say kudos to the lions coaching staff, the conversion of Karnezius to the mid field is pure genius.

The recruitment of Karnezis was pure genius.

Been great watching our draft bolters really develop over the past 5 years. Redden, Karnezis, Yeo and so far Paparone.

Would be nice if our first round picks could bolt as well.

Yeah I know who was missing, but a smashing is eight to ten goals and we won by six so I don't see a fourteen to sixteen goal turnaround. Anyway, the results in the preseason are so topsy turvy you can't just say because a club fields their best team they will necessarily cruise to a win. It's possible we would have lifted our game too if those star Pies had played.

Now in reality, I don't give a stuff playing at Etihad.

But when is the GABBA available. In less than 24 hours, the Bulls officially wont be able to host the Shield Final. How long does it take to get ready for footy??

Either way, they should have a bit more time to get the game ready for round 2:rolleyes:

we looked good tonight. Wish we would learn to not give away so many free kicks, most were there. this group has taken the step we have all been waiting for. My stand out was micheal, showed some incredible signs. also our hand balling in close was second to none tonight.. I think hands in close is one of the key attributes of great sides. Moloney was slow at first but had a great second half. rich was simply incredible. I thought beams looked sloppy tonight, one of few downsides. the pies disposal was woeful!

Patfull's dive to save a goal.

Enough said. If he can somehow spread that desperation (osmosis perhaps?) then I can see good things happening!

Thought Merrett's spoil was fantastic too. Really good to see him so comfortable in the backline.

AA Defender 2013!

AA Defender 2013!

Of all our players he's the one I'm comfortable in seeing is well and truly amongst the competition's elite in his position. Would not be remotely surprised if he was in AA contention by season's end.

Based on the radio broadcast alone, I enjoyed hearing Longer going well at the centre bounces. Obviously it stands out hearing "Longer wins the tap" over and over but he sounded like he was doing well, albeit against not the greatest ruck opponents.

We all enjoy hearing it but it's pretty much a given Longer will excel in the ruck, what I'm waiting to hear is how much he's been able to impact a match up forward. But for a second year ruck his size, contribution and attitude are immense. Billy is going to be a damn fine player.

Thought Billy and Doc showed more than enough to justify their picks tonight....

I don't think that it would be unfair to say that, at the moment, a full-strength Pies side would be a 8-10 goal better side than us.

That reflects a situation whereby we could reasonably expect to be outscored by about 2 goals per quarter, assuming no early or late blowout, simply due to us turning the ball over more often and them having some of the games very best players. Our challenge is to gradually reduce that gap, and whilst tonight's game provided some further encouragement it's going to take some time, as well as luck, if its going to happen at all. The Pies are a pretty good benchmark to aim at though.

Malcolm Holmes, Woey, Fletch and a few others including Marco Paparone spoke for the crowd at the after match function and said some interesting things actually,

Apparently Maguire was dropped on form from last week, and so they could get another look at Clarke

Also Redden has a bit of a sore elbow (or shoulder, cant remember 100%) so missed, but should be fine for next week.

Leuey is a bit up in the air, 'a bit tender' were the words woey used, he sounded like he doubted Leuey would be back next week.

Not really new news but he also confirmed that Sam Mayes was carrying a bit of a groin from a full pre-season of running

Malcolm Holmes was very warm and was very strong on how 'angry' the club was at only getting 4 Melbourne games. He joined heartily in a stirring rendition of our club song, led by a very drunk lady on microphone.

Laurie Seraphini was all class.

That is all.

Was more or less speaking out about our injuries affecting our first round picks (Which includes Bartlett, Polec, Mayes, Docherty and Leuenberger)

But yes, you're right about Billy and Doc.

:thumbsu:

I don't think we would have been smashed either. Their classy players would have eventually found a way to win but its still the pre-season, lots of players looking very rusty from the parts of games I've seen the last two weeks. Once the season starts and they have all those players fit...yep we would would be beaten easily.
