I don't think your post is all that clear. Are you saying it is impossible for teams to suddenly turn a corner?

To be honest, I tend to feel that over the last week many of your questions towards me have been quite facetious, including this one above.

I completely agree with Maroon and Blue.

I'm completely sick of, every year, reading people on this board continually referring back to the "If it bleeds, we can kill it" mythology that people seem to think will magically turn things around from a dire situation that does NOT compare closely with how things were back in 2001. It's as bad as the "Shinboner Spirit" at North Melbourne.

Where's the vomit emoticon, anyone?

Geez you ARE getting old and cynical aren't you.?

Speaking of vomit emoticons, I really could have used one, when reading M&B's revisionist history of the first half of 2001.

Unless I'm living in an alternative reality, I can assure readers that at several points of time in Season 2001 there were many vehement and vitriolic calls for the sacking of Leigh Matthews on the "old" Brisbane Lions Forum.

Especially after the 83 point loss to the Blues in Round 8.....followed closely by an agonizing loss to the Crows at the Gabba a week later.

Oh they were "exciting" times alright

4-5, a couple of terrible losses, the all conquering Bombers to play the next week and a list that was looking average at best!

The "anticipation" was there alright...anticipation that we would finish well and truly in the bottom half of the comp, that we were going backwards and that it would be at least 3 seasons before we could mount any sort of serious challenge for a top 4 berth , much less a Flag.

Did someone say: Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story?

Amen to that

I need a non-supermod account so people do try to read extra things into my posts.

Revealing "slip", much? What are you trying to say Weevs? You like people over-analyzing your words?

Or are you just trying to lead us off the scent of your extra accounts? Reveal thyself [strike]mickeyblueeyes[/strike]Weevil!

Don’t think anyone is arguing that we are going to win 3 flags in a row Stocks.

No-one wanted to argue that after the completion of Round 9 of 2001 either.

In fact, you could have written your own ticket at that time.

It never ceases to amaze me the overblown sense of "history that was about to be made" that some people around here have, when referring to 2001.

The perception at the time was very different.

If you couldn't see the potential then you would have to be blind freddie, which I know your not. To equate the current list with the class of 2001 is folly. And my proof; a lazy three cups.

Being honest, I thought, after 9 rounds, that the 2001 team was capable of being a top 4 team, but I was certainly not thinking of premierships (singular or plural).

Having said that, trying to ignore hindsight, unfortunately I don't see any real parallels between the 2001 and 2011 teams.I am preparing for the worst in the short-term and hoping for steady improvement over time.

I saw all 3 flags in person, so I figure I can afford to be patient.

Yeah me too....and I agree with your philosophy.:thumbsu:

Gee there are some sooks around here.

Waahh!!...........we are 0-6,

Boo-hoo, sob!!!...no fair... we are crap...it's gotta be Voss' fault.

Whinge, groan, bitch, curse and grumble etc, etc.

Get behind your club your team and your coach

Go LIONS!!:thumbsu:

Luthor has got this spot on. We got smashed by Carlton in round eight and I remember the round nine game against the Crows as if it was yesterday. It was close at 3/4 time and we got overrun by a brilliant and rampaging last 1/4 by Burton and I made the now outlandish statement to a mate that we would never win a flag in my life time.

I distinctly remember posing on the old Lions board after round 9 about how incredibly frustrating supporting the team was. That we had been through so many black years and had never gotten anything out of it.

Again spot on. See comment above about my statement after the Crows game.

Tell you now one and all if any of you had known that we were going on a rampage after the Carlton and Crowes games back then I have no idea why you are around here as you caught something that my mob did not see and should be coaching or reading cards somewhere. I am still in awe of how we turned it around so fast.

My main memory was the roar when Robbie Copeland ran on in his debut game. A crowd favorite right from the get go.

Gotta admit that I do not remember that. Burton was such a good player for them in the last and of course Andrew McLeod was bloody good as well that that performance is indelibly stamped in my memory. Geez they turned it on when they had in the last.

After that Carlton game ,I prepared for another long year.

Still cant believe sometimes ,how good they turned out to be.That team gave me so much joy, something I never expected in my wildest dreams.

I believe this side also has promise.Need some patience.

...and that's the thing John.

It can and does turn around very fast in this comp......if you don't panic when things look grim.

Us (we) in the early noughties, Geelong in 2007 and 2009, Hawthorn in 2008 and even (much as it irks me to say it), Collingwood in 2010.

Also Port Adelaide in 2004.

And maybe to a lesser extent,

Sydney in '05 and WCE in '06

In all these cases, the Premiership Club has been one that has stuck with it's vision, it's coach and the core of it's playing group.

And in all these cases, there have been calls (at some point) for the sacking of the coach in the year or years leading up to the ultimate success.

Even Sheedy was under a deal of pressure in the late 90's, especially after the Bombers were "shamed" by the Bluebaggers in that famous PF in 1999. Essendon were almost un-backable favorites for the Flag in 1999 but stumbled at the second last hurdle.

They fixed that up in 2000 alright, didn't they?

The point is, success has been had by those clubs/teams that have ridden out the tough times....adversity breeding success.......and all that.

Which is what Voss is pretty much asking us to do right now.

Sure he's made some blunders but the vibe I'm getting is that the players believe in him.

I think we as supporters and armchair critics have got to respect that:footy:

Exactly. Was about to say the same thing bout the Cats.

They were shithouse and getting booed off for their efforts at Skilled just one year before winning the flag. All teams have talent. All depends on spirit and execution of skill. I've been happy with the passion our young cubs have shown this year. Hope they can keep it up and they will get that first win. Reckn they can do it without Browny. Just need to believe they can. They're all extremely talented athletes. It's the desire and drive which makes them exceptional (or in St Kildas case this year 'not' exceptional)

Nick Reiwolt doesnt have the same freakish ability as someone like Franklin IMO but the last couple of years he had a positive attitude and incredible workrate. This year I've been happy with our workrate.

I can remember that Leigh wasn't a popular man at different stages on the old official forums. I'm also glad that Jarrod Molloy was traded after 2000 because he was a major scapegoat for some of the posters on there (unfairly so in my opinion).

Funnily enough I think that Carlton game was the last time that we played three specialist ruckmen in the same side. Although you could say that it kinda happened again this season with Clark, McCauley and Leuy.

Oh that Adelaide game was frustrating too.

I remember before the Essendon game that they were coming in with a few injuries and even though we had a horrible past record against them, I secretly hoped that this might be our best chance against them for a while. Despite all that I tipped against Brisbane for the first time ever cause realistically I thought we'd find a way to lose. Geeze at that stage of the season I would have been happy to make the finals.
