Not to mention Voss' inability to at least attempt to make Brennan accountable.

Ergh, now that was vomit-inducing. Can't believe he got BOG for running around as a loose man. Sullies Ashcroft's good name. Thought Krakouer was stiff.

I must say i am glad to be feeling red-faced over Leuey, I was gunning for Mitch Thorp (think Hawks took him) leading into the draft and once i saw Leuey play mid-season i was an immediate convert. Kudos to the Lions recruiting staff...as i have been critical in the past.

now...

You didn't watch the game if you think this. He is soft and as someone else said, should have just persisted with Cam Wood who is just as average and taken Joel Selwood, which is what I and many others wanted at the time. Leuey has a lot of supportrs on here, me not being one, but he is a big soft girls blouse and tonight proved it, even after the Suns second ruck went off. Waste of a pick 4.

There were quite a few things that really stumped me tonight;

- Why O'Brien was a sub, he's been coming along very welll this year and to sub a kid playing with momentum seems strange to me.
- Maguire - I don't see a spot for him in our side, he was largely ineffectual against two first gamers (Day & Lynch).
- The Merret FF experiment
- Collier - nuff said.
- Stiller - I know ppl on here will say there's a role for him in our team, but I disagree. Even thought we cannot have 22 stars in the one team, Stiller continually disappoints. Does he genuinely offer us anything apart from his endurance? Serious question.
- Unable to rectify the clearance issue. Again. It was like watching a train wreck, in slow-motion.
- Brennan unmarked for the entire first half.

Out of all the games we have lost, this game for mine was largely lost in the coaches box through selections and tactical blunders. I won't go as far as to call for Voss's head, yet, but the performance tonight was unacceptable - we didn't deserve to win.

unfortunate for you guys, worst possible time to be down the bottom of the ladder
sadly i dont think he has a very good list to work with

poor off season work, recruiting second tier players from other clubs thinking they had a crack at a premiership has cost you guys dearly

i know the majority of you guys have you torches out and pitch forks ready to hang him, and i dont blame the emotions, i wouldnt be happy either in your shoes

but i think from an outside perspective that if the club shows some faith in vossy and comes out at the end of the season and says we will give you another couple of years on your contract to redevelop this list and steer it in the right direction, it would be fantastic

we underachieved with mark thompson in 06, he had been with the club six seasons by then, we took a huge backwards step, the board showed huge faith in him and extended his contract further, and it paid dividends for us in the long run.

i know where you currently sit and where we sat is quite a different story, but the underachievement principle is still the same

chin up, your still the most successfull side of the last decade!

Leigh has a lot to answer for really, he jumped ship when he knew what was lying ahead and it got a bit hard, then handed the mess over to Vossy.Remember all those last quarters we lost in his last few years?

He is in some way to blame for the list the way it is. he will be remembered as a hero, but he also couldnt rebuild a team.

The move of Mcgrath to the forward line was almost a matchwinning one imo, no credit to Voss for that?
And Goose.....Except he was a liability in the backline...chest marks dropped at critical times.

Red faced over the Thorp comment Grim, but stand by my assessment that Leuey is just plain soft and have thought that for some time.

Shit John, I'm glad you recall every single comment you made 3 years ago, but we can't be all be as high and mighty as you.

Trying to be as diplomatic as possible (and boy its hard tonight), I guess we have one mere positive here - this is it. This is the lowest ebb. We could (and may) run 0-22 for the year and things still won't get as bad as they are right now. This is the tipping point, and I HOPE TO GOD the point where things move.

For me, it's now time for some really, really hard questions. We all know at this point the like of Stiller (even though I love him) and Collier are, at VERY best, fringe 22 material. For mine though, we have to dig deeper. When was the last time we seriously saw the likes of Patfull have an impact on a game? Is Polkinghorne ever going to reach the potential mark most here have set him up to? I can't believe I'm suggesting this, but is it time to have the likes of Black and Power give it away to teach the Rockliffs and Reddens they HAVE to be the ones taking over the clearances from here?

What the hell do we do at the next draft? We have a team full of in and under players who can't win clearances against the freaking Suns! Where do you begin? In dire key of a star forward, apparently MORE clearance players, outside midfielders...

And we don't even have a coaching solution! Voss has to see the year out. Not even really something I want as this point, but you've just replaced the whole assistant staff - who would take over? And, for next year, what coach do we find and how the hell do we find money to throw at them to convince them to take all of these issues on board?

Don't want to be the negative nancy here, and sorry if this is rambling, but good grief we're starting to land in some real strife. :(

EDIT - And speaking of Redden/Rockliff, how do two young players who have been so good against older opponents go missing in a game like this?!

Just the lack of desire for the ball from most of our players is what lost us the game tonight. We didn't really want it, they did. But the speed issue across our team is huge.

- Black
- Power
- Rich
- Rockliff
- Polkinghorne

All of them are basically slow. Put them together and place them against a fast / young / hungry midfield and it can be a disaster.

On the forward line
- Clark
- Cornelius or Retzlaff or Leuy

Banfield is usually the only player adding forward defensive pressure.

Then you have players like
- Maguire
- Collier
- Stiller
etc.

As soon as the ball goes into our defence or bounces to the opposition's side of the clearance situation then the feeble dam breaks with ease,

Voss has to acknowledge this as perhaps one of our biggest problems. Two weeks in a row it has been clear. Essendon will be exactly the same unless something miraculously changes.

Re: Never thought it would come to thid

Same thing was said of Worsfold this time last year, when a proud club finished dead last.

Take the year as it happens, and pursue with Vossy.....cant get any worse.
Not even remotely comparable. Woosh got additional special treatment cos he won us a recent flag.

Voss was a deadset idiot IMO giving up the asst coaching role at WCE, no matter the reason.

Can't even be comparing Hird and Vossy yet, Voss has had a few draft/trade periods to screw up, Hird hasn't had any yet really. He is still playing with the previous coach's players.

Re: Never thought it would come to thid

For a few minutes after the siren I may have agreed. We may be 0 - 6 but we have only been flogged once, I believe we are not far away from turning it around, once Brown comes back he will have an effect on the whole side and we will be winning more than we lose, call me an optimist, the loss is very frustrating but sacking him wouldn't achieve anything if you ask me.

Exactly.......the last thing we need on top of dismal performances, is more upheaval with changing coaches etc...and in the middle of the season!

It will all come together eventually....and Vossy will/and should be at the helm..

...and I don't want Roos OR Malthouse as coach!..

Re: Never thought it would come to thid

So what do we wait for Vossy to fall on hos sword or do we take action?? IMO this year was always going to be a tough one and sure we have lost game we could/should have won. Remember Richmond last season how many did they lose in a row?? Sure Vossy is a clown but when do the players start taking responsibility for being heartless and lazy?

Not sure why all the talk is about getting Roos, he has said he is happy having a break from coaching, so why would he come here. We wouldnt have the money to pay him anyway.
Some of the players have just got to start performing for a FULL GAME, We have a pretty average team but we have only been flogged once.
I always expected Suns to win, they were always going to be prime for this game.It breaks my heart to see Brennan and Rischi out there for them. The AFL have created a monster and in a year or so other teams will be feeling as we do at the moment. Our year was set in stone with those two major injuries and a shocking umpire decision.in the first game.We have never recovered from it.

Anyway MacMum, enjoy your Mothers Day.

These guys will not be part of our next flag.

I've seen this statement made about various players on our list. However, will ANY of our current list be part of the Lions' next premiership team?

Sure, some players are good enough as individuals to play in premiership teams with other clubs, but I think that the next time a Lions team is ready to play in a premiership may well be well past the vast majority of our current list's lifespan.

Unless Brown is out for the whole year, we're not going to go winless. To be honest that's not necessarily a good thing, as we're back to being carried on his shoulders but it's something to look forward to.

Re: From a Carlton Supporter....

Most likely it is all three. There were very ordinary decisions coming from the coaches box last night.........maybe born out of frustration with his players inability to do what is asked/expected of them + poor recruiting decisions since the Premiership Years.

Re: From a Carlton Supporter....

...do you really think it is Vossy's fault?

The guy was captain of a club with the best culture in the league.

Is it recruiting or the players ?

Won't answer because there is a whole thread on "coach after voss" you can post there and we will know who you support in your profile on the left. Don't have to fill our board with extra useless threads.....

Re: From a Carlton Supporter....

IMO the squad is grossly underperforming to be 0-6. And put simply the coachs job is to get the most out of his squad and he has not done that this season so far. So he deserves to face a lot of criticism.

Re: From a Carlton Supporter....

Sorry for intruding.

IMHO you guys have a bottom 8 list - even with Brown, Staker et al to come back. But having said that you should have won at least a game by now, the list is not that bad. If you agree with this then the only conclusion that can be reached is that Vossy is a poor coach and needs to go.

Personally, I'd give him till round 13 to turn it around. You play North an us at the Gabba, and should win both of those games. If Voss hasn't shown improvement by then sack him and look for a replacement, giving the incoming coach time to prepare for the draft and trade week.
