I know technically this should go on the expansion board, but I don't think too many people head there, and I'd interested to know what the feeling is among the majority.

You've got two potential options for a new side - Tasmania, and West Sydney.

West Sydney is dominated by Rugby League, NSW is a state which is not an AFL State, they have one side who, even with their successes, don't consistently draw massive crowds.

On the other hand, Tasmania is pure AFL, they've got no team (obviously) they'd be well supported, and now it seems the corporate sponsorship might follow.

So, which one makes more sense? Why the crap can't I make this a poll?

I'm amazed that nobody has started a thread on this already.

It's almost as though nobody has ever thought to discuss this particular topic.

I cant see the AFL giveing Tassie a team. They seem to have made up their minds they want West Sydney, the AFL are probally just humouring Tassie.

But I'd like to see a club in Tassie, its a true football state and I think they deserve it more then West Sydney.

Sydney do not deserve another team. If it does occur, they will be held up by the AFL for years and years.

So why don't you discuss it?

Was it a mistake to set up the Swans in 1982?

The AFL had to prop them up for years. Does that mean it was a bad move?

The decision to create the Swans underwrites the wealth that now exists in the game. There would be no muilti-million-dollar TV deal if we hadn't gone into NSW. It didn't pay off immediately - does that mean it wasn't worth it in the long run?

So why don't you discuss it?
Because it's all been said.

This thread will go over the same old arguments.

One camp will say, "Tassie deserves a team - the other places aren't ready."

The other camp will say, "the AFL needs to grow the game, and a team in Tassie won't achieve that."

Let me know if this thread ever moves beyond these repetitive, tired arguments.

Simple answer - we should have both!

If Tasmania is ever going to have a team, it should be a relocated Melbourne club who have a strong and established loyal base, with 2-4 home games in Melbourne.
Sydney is a BIG YES. The NRL is falling apart, soccer is moving, the time to go is right. It’s now or never.
If the game is not growing, its dying. Sydney must be a priority. Tasmania is only useful if it allows for ‘rationalisation’ of teams from a very crowded Melbourne.

The AFL would be silly not to push as hard as it could to create another team in NSW. Sure it's a challenge with rugby being the main game, but look at WA, here we've got two teams and the town is always abuzz with the rivalry. Sure it's a different environment, but why can't rugby and AFL live together in the same city? You got over 4 million people there!

Exactly, the Swans need healthy competition. If the AFL market the #hit out of a rivalry between the two Sydney sides come 2012, its will be in the words of Borat, "great success."

It's a different environment to Perth in that Perth is absolutely AFL mad! I think you could probably put a 3rd team in there right now no trouble. Both teams have massive waiting lists for membership. As opposes to Sydney which despite having a whole city/state to itself currently has 2nd worst membership in the comp.

Tassy will get a team one day, but not in this round of expansion.

Tassy makes an excellent fall back positions should GC, WS or any Melbourne team go belly up.

Current Membership ladder has...

Sydney 15th
Brisbane 16th

And a large amount of those members are Victorian based. If the SCG was sold out week in week out I would say lets look at a second club, but it is not. And either is the Gabba for that matter. I think a new team in Sydney has to be merged with a Victorian club to survive.

Tassie: does it have the population to hold up an AFL club? It definatly proven it can get the sponsors now.

My point here is The AFL is going gun ho at doing this. We are not seeing any research to back up their theories. Lets make sure which clubs can survive before putting them in.

Good luck Tassie, but I think you are fighting a battle which you are not allowed to even be in and therefore can't win.

A Few points to consider:

1) Tasmania already has sponsorship dollars on the table (Unlike Western Sydney)

2) a ground to play out of (Unlike Westdern Sydney)

3) a ground swell of support (Unlike Western Sydney)

4) guaranteed financial support from State Goverment (WS?)

5) Have a steering committee in place (unlike Western Sydney)

6) Sydney & Brisbane are currently ranked 15th & 16th in AFL memberships with only 22,737(B) and 26,721(S) even after are their recent success - discraceful. How many members could 2 new teams possibly get?

Just a few points of interest in my obvious support of a Tasmanian AFL team. So come on down Andrew Demetriou and we will keep stick Mars Bars up your clacker 'till you finally believe!:thumbsu:
