You had an easy drawing last year while this year you have arguably the hardest start to the year of all non-finalists.
Lol, you are fixated with the start of the draw.

You do realise the WHOLE season is what is relevant & we have an extra home game this year too.

Yes, I’m fixated on the start of the season because you’re likely going to go into pretty much every match in the first 8 rounds as the underdog, and if you lose all of those games or even get to 2-6 the knives will begin to sharpen for Nicks’ head.

It’s that simple.

It's "simple" alright!

Premierships are not won half way through a season.

I'm more concerned about the whole season, which is what everyone will be judging Nicks on as to whether he keeps his job.

Sacked coaches don't get a whole season though, the start is very relevant to the outcome and the pressure can make it harder. Sometimes the fixture really makes it tough for some coaches to survive.

This year is looking less stressful on paper but once the season starts 2-3 get sacked nearly every year without fail.

Nicks if Crows finish bottom 2 and fall in a heap, probably safe for now
Hinkley 100% sure if they miss the 8, or do crap in finals. Port really do need to make the GF this year.
Dew if GC fall in a heap, but I think they'll do better than people think.
Simpson probably safe even with a crappy season.

Nicks appears to be a cliche machine. Alan Richardson Mk2
I'm interested to see if their list management model pays off. It appears to be:

1) Get all the "natural" forwards
2) Get exclusively tough nut, contested, tackling midfield beasts
3) Worry about defenders later

I find it hard to judge Nicks because I think this model is sufficiently different to other clubs.

Dew and Hinley probably want and need to make finals.

Voss and Beveridge will be under some pressure without finals as well.

Not sure about Simpson. WC probably in a rebuilt now. Need to decide wether they want him or somebody else to do the job.

Most other are somehow reasonably safe. But serious underachieving on clubs expectaion probably can trouble most coaches past their second year.
Hinkley will get an extension. Port's management is run by avid Crows supporters.

Crows fans got pretty upset in the ladder prediction thread when I raised how hard the first half of their draw is and how they could spiral rather than push for finals if they don't start reasonably well, but this might be the thread to discuss it as it will dictate Nicks' future.

He really needs to knock off a couple of finalist early or they'll come for him, I feel.

I might be a bit harsh on the Crows as I reckon that if we've got the worst midfield in the comp then the Crows have the second worst and I don't think much of their defense either, but up to the bye they play 6 of the 2022 finalists which is a hard run, and they also face Port and Blues, who most see as sides that will rise.

Will 5 wins to halfway mark be ok? Or does the AFC expect more?

If they don't knock off the Giants, Hawks and Saints and they lose all of the bolded games below, which they'll be doing well not to, they'll be 0-9, Nicks' papers are probably stamped and he'll be a dead man walking by June.

R1 - Giants 50/50
R2 - Tigers - L
R3 - Port
- L
R4 - Dockers
- L
R5 - Blues
- L
R6 - Hawks 50/50
R7 - Pies - L
R8 - Cats
- L
R9 - Saints 50/50
R10 - Dogs L
R11 - Lions - L
R12 - Suns 50/50
R13 - Eagles 50/50

They're my big watch going into 2023, as Nicks' already has some detractors amongst Crows fans/members and even with the challenging start to the year they'll expect some wins against a couple of more highly fancied sides at home.
There's no way Nick's will continue on if The Crows miss finals again. I'm not even sure why they picked him as senior coach in the first place, he came from an unsuccessful era with Port. I guess his 1 year at a Runner Up club with GWS hoodwinked them?

I'm reliably informed they will beat most of Richmond, Carlton, Dockers, Pies and Lions in the first half of the year. Will be a good effort.

Longmire, fagan and bevo all recently signing new deals

Pressure on ken and crazy vossy

Longmire signed to the end of 2025 today and I don't think there will be too many Swans fans upset by that. A few years ago I was in the camp that he needed to go, that he didn't have the ability to change his game plan and work with the list he has now rather than the list he had 8 years earlier but in the last 2 years he has proven me wrong, changing the game plan quite a bit in that time. We may not have won the flag last year but he took a very young Swans list far further than even the most optimistic Swans fan could have imagined and the list should only get better in the next couple of years when our younger players mature.
