Being charged by the police is really nothing more than the police believing that the case is strong enough to be convicted. Also the one that isn't in hospital is usually always the one that gets charged despite the circumstances that lead to it.
That said, self defence is an affirmative defence (if that is how they go) so at least we will be getting some details about it. I am surprised the AFL haven't done anything yet. Maybe because of the speed of the incident to the charge but it seems that they already had Thomas suspended before the police charge (may be misremembering).

AFL haven’t done anything yet because half of them would still be on holidays.
If it was in season it would of already be dealt with.
Guy reports to hospital with a cut to the head. Balta hands himself to police to avoid a possible shit storm considering his identity. Gets charged with assault. That’s all the evidence they need. It will be a fine a possible good behaviour and no conviction recorded. AFL will dick swing and make the penalty more severe because that’s their prerogative

Balta obviously being one of them himself.
Tigers obviously tanking by booting their best player out for 4 matches. Had very winnable games against Carlton, Port, Saints and Freo. Not so much now.
