Play Nice Australia Day 2025

Footy clubs aren't just that though, they're community leaders.

People want their teams to be something more than that, that's just how people are today. Otherwise the GWS dress up thing wouldn't have blown up like it did.

I'm not saying whether it's right or wrong, it's just the way it is.

When ROB won the Jim Stynes medal for his community work, there was universal celebration.

But when the club celebrates some of it’s community work through their indigenous programs, its ’virtue signalling’ and ‘the club should stick to football’.

Given ROB was dropped for a period last season, should we be admonishing him for his community work and telling him to stick to football?

If you wish to be lead by your footy club on social issues fair enough.

You got a post of mine celebrating ROB’s Jim Stynes medal? Couldn’t care less what he does in his spare time. What matters is performance on the football field.

I'm not saying I do, but what I'm saying is there's a distinct smell of "I don't like it so therefore my football club shouldn't do it"

You could..... I dunno, ignore it ??
Sorry you have lost me, are you saying the Crows ( my footy club) should direct by social media
any opinion at all toward my thinking on social issues ?

It’s not an I don’t like it FFS, they should be void of an opinion in the first place, it is my footy club
not a political party.

So - let's say the Crows don't have any public position on Reconciliation. How would that make the Indigenous players feel?

I think a club needs values. You don't have to have the same values in order to be a fan of that club, but the club needs to stand for something.

Why should they be void of an opinion. We have indigenous players and fans.

It's amazing people care so much to be negative about it

You guys obviously put a lot more importance on the views put forward by a footy club on this stuff
or more importantly the individuals forming that view on the clubs behalf for whatever reason than I do .

Just play better footy, win a premiership, and let people enjoy the footy is all

How do you feel they would react on the saddest day of the year for Indigenous people that the club puts out a post that they have 5 jobs for Indigenous folk? I felt it was really tacky.

It beggars belief that the same people can't see it for what it is, a club unable to put their best foot forward without sticking it in their mouth first. This was really poor and to make matters even worse, you have one guy wanting to see if he can get someone sacked over laughing at the post and someone else trying to enable the guy to do it.

Not on political issues they don’t. You’re only happy with it because you sit on the virtue signalling side of the ledger. Remember all your type wanting ROB cancelled for posting that Peterson image?

Yep give me a dusty or Degoey over a ROB any day.

How about the white Australians in the team who are proud to be Australian and would like their club to acknowledge Australia Day?

Why can't they play both sides of the fence here? You can have two separate social media posts one where you recognise what this day means for some Australians there by supporting your indigenous players, staff and fans while also still post about being thankful to be an Australian and what a great country we live in.

Feel like we are stuck between a rock and a hard place, I personally can recognise this is a hard day for some of our population but I also would like to celebrate being an Australian and how great we all are on a national day. Why can't today still be a public holiday where we recognise what happened in 1788 and also have another date where we can all come together and celebrate Australia and what it means to be Australian, the last 5 years have been nothing short of awful. The government need to step in and just give us an extra public holiday so that everyone can come together and move on, and look to the future.

Unfortunately I highly doubt changing the day will have much effect on those people that have a problem celebrating all the great things Australia has achieved on all levels icluding inclusivity, they'll still carry on with their well worn agendas.

I'm not sure why we need to celebrate 1788.

Let's just make Australia Day like Easter - say, the first Monday in February. We don't need to celebrate a historical event. We want to celebrate the present and future, what the country has become.

I haven't seen any clubs telling their fans what to think.

But I have seen clubs saying clearly what the club thinks.

I think that's fine. You go on thinking whatever you like.
We literally started this off with someone trying to get the sanfl to sack someone for laughing at a club post.
Isn’t that very similar to wanting the club to tell people how to think?

Plus it’ll be a guaranteed long weekend every year.

You say that but the majority of people want Australia Day on Australia Day and I don’t think it’s even close?

As will all the right wing identity warriors.

Extremists on both sides will stay extreme.

But it would be good to find something for the majority of Australians that understand why indigenous people have difficulty with the date, but also want to celebrate what is a fantastic country.

It seems pretty simple doesn't it?
