Prediction:

We will develop a really solid rivalry with Melbourne. With the talent on both lists, can see both sides go deep into September the next several years.

I reckon you will be coming back to this prediction with a big self satisfied grin. Melbourne are set up just a step behind us. Hard, contested brand and well coached. We'll be in each other's faces too.

Umps just helped Dogs to a 1 point win

The HUN's Sam Edmond agrees, they do appear to be the umpire's darlings.....

"LET’S clear this up straight away — the Western Bulldogs aren’t back, they’re just extremely lucky.

The premier got the four points against North Melbourne, but also got the rub of the green from the umpires in a drama-packed night under the lid.
We don’t often talk about free kick counts or the officials, but such was the influence it — and they — had on this game it would be ridiculous to ignore it.
The Bulldogs led by 18 points at quarter-time, 21 at halftime and 26 at the 11-minute mark of the last quarter. Yet how they escaped with a one-point victory might keep Brad Scott awake at night for some time.
The final free kick count was 26-13 in the Dogs’ favour. At one stage it was 15-2 and the Bronx cheers echoed around Etihad Stadium on the rare occasion the Roos got one."

Their Free kick differential is the best in the league, I guess they must just be that victimised AND that disciplined...:rolleyes::rolleyes::drunk::thumbsdown:

While I think Bachar Houli does a lot of good things for the game, the suspension is unders for the offence in my mind.

If he'd been offered a sanction by the MRP he would have gotten more. That doesn't sit well with me that the tribunal can use a "nice guy" discount which is a halving of the offence, when the charge is contested. Clean record give a discount, but 3 weeks rather than 2 weeks.

I am a not committed to an opinion either way on this one, but I believe he started at 4 weeks, one down for guilty and then one down for a clean record.
I do think we have seen willfully violent acts get less

I think it was unfortunately always going to be controversial with the Muslim angle. Not going to buy into into that, except to say the game is improved by his presence, both in his onfield contribution and the symbolism involved. 3 or 4 weeks appropriate though

It wasn't a guilty plea as I understood it as there was an issue over whether it was intentional or careless, which has a technical ruling as to the action was "in play" or "behind play". Richmond argued "in play" (careless) Tribunal found otherwise.

As such I thought it was 4 weeks down to 3 for clean record down to 2 for "nice guy".

And there does seem to be a varying standard applying for intentional acts, but I think that is partly due to the grading and suspension system used by the MRP.

It's interesting they've appealed, it may give us all an insight into what their thought processes were.
The Gillon AFL is often guilty of making management decisions as a result of media pressure or public commentary, the decision to appeal feels like one of those calls, if they were legitimately worried about the tribunal's decisions in their own right they'd be requesting a review of how Oliver came to fall over as well.

I think Oliver shows how much the game has changed. I think he screwed up, but he's 19 and I think the matter will probably be handled internally by Melbourne and I'm happy for it to be left there.

I do believe any player exaggerating impact and whinging about soreness after the game would have copped it big time from teamates in the Hawks sides of the 80's. The game could be brutal then but the culture was you gave it and you took it, and you left it on the field. Maybe rose coloured glasses and I get Sheedy's attitude was no different but times have changed.

In those days the opposition would almost certainly have made sure he had a really sore jaw before the end of the match.

Yeah
I agree with taking thuggery out of the game, but now it seems to have gone hard in the wussy direction.
It was no surprise to hear Lethal on Gameday lament the inability of the tagged to wack a tagger to stop the constant scragging. Someone else on the panel proposed the obvious alternative, umps free kick OTT scragging early...that will stop the practice quickly.
