How smart are Richmond as a footy club. Going to off load Ellis and because he is in the top 10 Richmond paid players Richmond will get end of first round pick for him. That will give them pick 18 and 19 in the draft . Not bad for the reigning premiers. No way he is in the best 10 players of their club but they have obviously known for a couple of years their plan and have juggled the payments beautifully.

They’ll get an end of 2nd round pick for him.

I think the value of your current contract affects the timeline for RFA vs FA in terms of leaving the club but the compensation pick is based on the value of the contract at the new club (and theoretically things like being captain, B&F etc).

The pick they get depends on what Gold Coast are paying him. Having him in the top 10 Richmond players only affects whether he's a restricted (top 10) or unrestricted (not top 10) free agent.

Some of the ideas thrown up for trade scenarios for the Crouch brothers by Crows (mainly on twitter) are next level. Rankine and Luscious for the Crouch brothers, Pick 1 and 2 for Crouch brothers, etc., then when a GC supporter steps in to defend himself he gets attacked pretty hard. This year at the Gabba I found the Crows supporters to be pretty sore losers (heartbreaking loss to be fair) and though a small set don't represent the whole, overall I've never found Adelaide or Port supporters to be particularly pleasant.

It wasn't just Crows supporters. Michael Barlow put up that gem of a trade idea of picks 1 & 2 for the Crouch bros lol. Either he's not the sharpest tool in the shed or still a little bitter at his ex employer.

With the mature players the Suns brought in last year, Ellis & Greenwood this year. I'd be happy just to back the young talent in from last year & picks 1 & 2 this year, along with whatever other mature players you can bring in for your mid first round picks or end of first round picks.

Suns literally just need to keep their current crop of players now. They've got buy in from guys like Witts, Swallow, Thompson, Ainsworth, Bowes, Weller, Sexton, Ballard, Collins, Powell, Fiorini, plus the additions of Ellis and Greenwood which provides them with a sustainable, core group of players who can aid Dew and Co. in creating a solid culture and put in competitive performances on field.

The cream on top is their batch of incoming elite talent, Lukosius, Rankine, King, Rowell and Anderson. That's an extremely talented group of young players. Rivals the kind of talent they and GWS started with imo. If they can get these 5 to buy in(Rankine already has) and become just as committed to turning the club around on and off field like guys like Swallow, Ainsworth, Bowes, Weller and Sexton have then they will be a decent side in a couple of years. Not too mention on top of the aforementioned 5, they'll likely add pick 1 or 2 in next years draft as well.

Frustrating now for the club, yes, but they go into them willingly and for mutual benefit.
They also wouldn't have the cap space to make him the kind of offer that might keep him there a bit longer.
I think Ellis will he band 3.
Do these recruits for GC at least mean they can stop giving games to the likes of Corey Ellis and Horlin-Smith? Using Horlin-Smith as the loose man in defence is one of the strangest coaching moves I can remember.
Reasonably fair assessment from Wallace
What's the world coming to?

Yep. I've seen people bemoaning the additions of Brandon Ellis and Hugh Greenwood for the Suns and labelling them as spuds ect. They aren't world beaters, however, they're definitely an upgrade on the likes of Miles, Horlin-Smith, Murdoch, and Corey Ellis who the Suns brought in this past year. They're probably at a similar level to someone like Jack Hombsch, if not a little better and Hombsch was without a doubt the best performed of the Suns mature aged recruits this year before going down with injury.

Ellis and Greenwood won't drive the Suns into the top 8 but they will help keep the Suns competitive whilst they rebuild and thus help their young players develop and they could become solid role players when they start to climb the ladder.

Was only going by what was reported on SEN with Andy Maher and Bob Murphy. This was their comments that they will have pick 18 and 19.
Ok cool then cheers if they wont be getting those picks.

They might be getting that pick but if they do it'll be because of what Gold Coast are paying him, not where Richmond had him in their pay structure. The second bit not being relevant was what I was pointing out.

Barrett going with the story that the Swans will have to give picks 5 & 9 to get Daniher. Just me or is this just Vic media bias? I wouldn't be paying that in a fit. Reckon this might be a trade we could get involved with for pick 9.

The media only cares about the headline.

Sydney might give up 5 and 9 to get Daniher, but if they get Essendon's 2020 first round pick back it looks a lot less ridiculous even though it'll be portrayed the same way.

It's also worth noting both that Barrett knows **** all and Essendon is almost definitely getting an ambit claim out there to make Sydney seem unreasonable for only wanting to give up the metaphorical packet of chips.

One thing we know is that whatever the posturing, the deal will get done. Assuming he gets on the field at all, I can see Daniher missing a lot of football in Sydney; his body won't stand up to playing on the hard SCG surface. He's not like Buddy who can play through it.

For an All Australian full forward aged 25? That's a bargain!

For a bloke whose body is ruined and has barely played for two years? That's a rort!

My view is that he's worth pick 5 and a late first rounder. I think the injury history is not a massive factor as clearly Sydney wouldn't be chasing him if they thought he was a crock.

Hogan was 6 and 23 with a very late pick going back, Daniher is as injury prone, older and will be a FA next year. Maybe you can argue that Daniher is a better player I guess?

5 and a late 1st is probably in the ballpark, I'd probably say its more like 5 and an earlyish second but thats a small difference in picks and depending on what goes back to Syd with Daniher 5 and a late first could work.

It suggests the Swans are worried about how much more footy Buddy has in him. Even if there is a pick back, that with picks 5 and 9 is likely more than what Geelong will get for Kelly and I know who I'd rather have at our club for the next five years.

Geelong and West Coast supporters are all up in each other’s grills over the Kelly deal. I am expecting a restraint of trade post anytime soon.

Both sets of supporters are outraged that things aren’t going their self-entitled club’s way. I hope it lingers until the last few minutes of trade week and then gets done in a way that offends them all.

Pretty sure I've seen a couple on the Trading board! West Coast supporters are well and truly up and about over the whole thing and understandably so, I would be if TK nominated the Lions.

Hypocrisy of the cats is astounding. I get they have to drive a hard bargain (and think its fair they do so) but he isn't in contract. Fair enough, push for your two first rounders, but the language around it is laughable from them. Stuff like "three first rounders".. "there's people in the club who don't want to trade Tim at all".. "He might have to go tho the draft".. etc.. Sorry, but West Coast hold the whip hand, you aint getting 3 first rounders. If he was to go to the preseason draft, teams would let him slip to WC anyway given the family situation and then you lose him altogether for zilch, no one is taking 'rent a Tim' for 2 years - suck it up, you've made a living off leveraging players out of their respective clubs and having them nominate you for the last 7-8 years. Time to see what it feels like.

I think West coast's first this year and next year for Tim given he is an un-contracted player is about right.

Also their insistence that Freo be in play is astounding, given the 9 other Vic clubs don't even register a mention when a player nominates them. He is playing for Westcoast next year - play your hard ball, but prepare to accept 2 ok first rounders at the trade bell.

Geelong is in a funny position list wise. They clearly are in the premiership window so to lose your second best player over the past season leaves a massive hole that almost certainly can't be replaced. So they weren't quite good enough this year and are likely to be worse next year. Pretty shitty place to be in mentally for their supporters.

There is a cliff coming for Geelong I think... all their best players will be 30 or older come next year... Dangerfield (30), Hawkins (32), Selwood (32), Ablett (36), Taylor (34), Tuohy (30), Henderson (30).

Then you have Duncan and Blicavs both turning 29 next year...

Bit of a Lions of 2005 smell about them I think... lots of aging stars and lots of "nice" looking young players (most of whom only look okay thanks to the older players).
