A SECRET tape recording has emerged of a crisis meeting held at the height of Essendon’s drugs war with the AFL.

The extraordinary 2013 recording of Bombers chairman Paul Little, coach James Hird, senior assistant Mark Thompson and football manager Danny Corcoran lays bare their fury as they come to the view they have been betrayed by the AFL and its deputy chief, Gillon McLachlan.

In the recording an angry Little says: “I rang him (McLachlan) last night and I said, ‘You know, you’ve really upset me here, because you’ve gone back on your word, Gil’.

“He said, ‘No no, I haven’t, I haven’t’. I said, ‘You have. You told me one thing, and now you’re doing something else’.”

A clearly desperate Hird says: “They’re a pack of f---ing lying pr---s — and they have done from the start … ”

Little also says McLachlan told him the previous night, “there is a 99 per cent chance that the players won’t be charged” for doping.

The August 8 meeting at Windy Hill was called just hours after lawyers for the AFL told Essendon that charges would be laid against the club and officials over the 2012 drug injections program.

The tape, until now a secret, exposes how the Bombers felt the AFL was threatening them to either accept sanctions or be “stood down” as a club. Little says: “That’s the gun at our head.”

After reading excerpts of the recording, Labor federal MP Kimberley Kitching has now joined a push for a Senate inquiry into the conduct of the AFL and ASADA.

Senator Kitching said on Thursday night: “It is clear mistakes were made by regulators and others, and those mistakes must never again be repeated.”

The league has always maintained that the AFL Commission “hearing” to decide the fate of Essendon and its officials — held two weeks after the recorded crisis meeting — was not compromised by backroom deals and negotiations.

The leaked tape throws serious doubt on those claims.

Campaigners for an inquiry...

etc

Detailing another conversation with McLachlan about the clearing of the Essendon 34 from doping charges, Little says: “He’s now saying to me, ‘Oh, I was referring to (AOD)-9604’, and I said, ‘That is f---ing crap’.

“I said, ‘We parked 9604, we all agreed that that was going nowhere’, and then we spoke about getting the players cleared, ‘unconditionally’ was the word I used ...

“And he said ‘What do you want from me?’. And I said — no, he then said to me, ‘There is a 99 per cent chance that the players won’t be charged’.

“And I said ‘Well, I’d like to believe you, but are you happy for me to use that language in front of the players?’

“And he said ‘Oh no, you can’t do that’. And I said ‘Well, f--k, you’re telling me one thing and over here we can’t say anything to the players’.

“And he said ‘Let me work on it. I will try and give you some language that will give you the comfort that the players so desperately need’.”

Little responds: "And it's questionable whether ASADA should have even handed it over to the AFL …

"You know, to give someone an interim report where 20 per cent of it is blacked out and you can’t even read it is a f---ing joke, and then make a decision based on that …

"And Gil McLachlan says, 'Oh, by the way, the redacted parts, we’ll give them to you in a day or two.' Oh, f--k, I haven’t seen them, they haven’t come. You know, so, mate, that story can be told and the fact that (Andrew) Demetriou has put himself up as being not able to talk to us because he's conflicted.

"Well, f---ing what's happened to his confliction for the last six months?"

Excuse me if I don't take an article 100% seriously when whoever put together the page it was printed on put the words "listen" and "now" in the wrong order. :$

Here's a summary of the recordings:
"They said they were going to cover it all up for us, that the players would get off, now they're saying they can't come good on the promise, the ****ing lying arseholes!!"

Unfortunately the 2 separate issues will just get lumped together and Essendons ''innocence'' will be loudly proclaimed

Yes Essendon acted inappropriately and got punished for it

Yes the AFL screwed them and should be held accountable

But neither action excuses the other.

That some people think this requires a senate enquiry is astounding.

How about we let it be, and don't have our fine suited friends waste any more time on it.

Gonna turn around once

Finally somebody speaking words of wisdom :thumbsu:

Enough to make your blood continue to boil. Amazing that Gil went on to take the top job, whilst club, players and Hird got screwed. When is the "Senate inquiry into the conduct of the AFL and ASADA" going to happen?

Gil handled this poorly. He should have been upfront and told the club from the start that there will be ramifications for the club if found guilty.

Please make it go away... Essendon got slapped with a massive fine for governance issues... and got hit with nothing once the players were punished.

The players knew that there was something wrong with the "supplements" regime when it went off-site. They deserved to get a full 2 year ban. As it was, it got backdated 12 months even after they were found guilty and didn't give significant assistance during the ASADA and WADA investigations.

And to make matters worse... Essendon were rewarded by the AFL for having 12 players banned for 12 months after they finished last on the ladder! I would have moved their first round pick to the end of the first round so that they had picks 18 and 19 together!

The club, players and Hird would only have ever benefitted from the AFL's meddling. It's embarrassing that this even comes up. If the AFL did nothing your club and players would've swiftly been done for doping, they simply tried to help you and failed and now your club is just blaming them for the fact you were doping.

They even organised short little deals that you could've taken years ago to spare yourselves international embarrassment.

There's nothing more to it. EFC have themselves to blame. Maybe don't do enough dumb crap to get dobbed in by the ACC next time would be my advice to the club

Not to mention they got first dibs on all of their top up players, a luxury not afforded to clubs who lost players that they didn't even pump illegal drugs into.

EFC community party line post 2013 sanctions. "What is this BS? it's just governance! We're not dopers!" EFC community party line after getting done for doping "We've already been punished" ---not for doping you haven't

Find it interesting that there was no discussion about what they took. It was like they had all come to a consensus on that issue. No mention of dank and did he actually give us what he said he did. Did what dank give us truly contravene ASADA laws.
Quite happy to put the Line through AOD as a non starter for prosecution.

Just seemed to me they were discussing from a standpoint of what do they know. Not that we are innocent because we know what we took and it was legal.
The redacted sections of report was a major point of concern, this tells me that the all knew there was something to be concerned about but they were not sure what the AFL had on them.
