Entertainment & Music Ocha's Hottest 100 Song Contest songs

25-21
We start the final quarter with probably the least controversial section with 4 SC winners.

25. Dusty Springfield – “Spooky” Stokey

Some things - like a walk, a glass of water or a good night;s sleep are amazing in their simplicity. Here is another example, a dreamy love song that takes no effort to lock into.

24. Garbage – “I Think I’m Paranoid” Rodney Dangerfield

The industrial, grunginess elements gets a coat of spiffy electronic paint which combines seamlessly into a classic 90's alt rock track.

23. Hatchie – “Giving the World Away” Greenery

This could well have been the discovery of last year. Here is a should-be FIFA anthem (get onto it FIFA!) that will leave you in a trance.

22. Bloodred Hourglass – “In Lieu of Flowers” Purple7x08_24

The clarity of the riffs in such a dark and heavy mix is the highlight here. Like the message of hope in a moment of despair.

21. Laufey – “From the Start” and “Falling Behind” Loonerty and Tubbs

Another strong contender for the find of last year is curtesy of an OG song contest duo. It's fitting of Laufey to be in the same section as Dusty Springfield as she's kind of like the evolutionary version.

Only if the rest of your entries contain songs i nommed?
I don't think anyone would be upset with that given your record!

I really enjoy the rock/grunge songs from this era! I was a kid then and wasn't listening to that kind of music (cough Spice Girls cough) so it's like discovering all these hidden gems decades late XD

20-16
Here's where I jump the shark and instantly lose any respect I had (if I even had any to begin with lol). But every list needs a "what the heck?" pick though so let's to get it!

20. Opeth - "The Grand Conjuration" Greenery

Describing this would be like trying to navigate the Labyrinth of the Minotaur without a ball of string to guide you back. You get lost in it is my point. The immaculate drumming is always on point though.

19. Ayesha Erotica – “Hands Up! (remix)” Ligma

Here it is, the shark jump! I stand by it's placement. It's the ultimate thirst trap anthem, equal parts ridiculous and danceable and all dumb fun. The "Lose Yourself" callback gets me every time :roflv1:

18. Selena Gomez – “Kill Em With Kindness (acoustic)” Chipmunk

This is probably the best example of a acoustic version being the superior version. The original is a most stock-standard effort. Strip away the superfluous tinsel though and what remains is a rich heart that is allowed to breathe.

17. Deafheaven – “Sunbather” Drunkgoliath

My favourite metal band had to be on the list. Listening to Deafheaven is like walking into a raging storm. You're going to be knocked around and have your senses pummeled but it's pure catharsis.

16. Ludovico Einauldi – “Nightbook” and “Elegy for the Arctic” por_please_ya and myblueroan

The master and probable inventor of the pop-classical genre knocks it out of the park here with some twists. In "Nightbook" Ludovico actually utilises percussion for once whilst for "Elegy for the Arctic" an actual breaking ice shelf provides the impact.

There's no shame in enjoying bubblegum pop. S Club 7 was more my thing though :)

And yeah I missed out on the era too so it's nice to discover some through this contest. 90's alt rock was a great mix of experimental and catchiness in general.

Oooh Opeth and deafheaven

This is the new year's resolution gym equivalent of music top 100s. Hit the first few weeks running then grind to a halt then need to remember to cancel your membership.

15 more then you can put this bad boy to rest forever Ocha905, until you do your top 1000 songs after your 1000th round...

15-11
Thanks for the pep-talk Riviat you'd be a good PT!

15. Bliss N Eso – “The Sea is Rising” RedmanWasHere

Usually don't like vague/generalised/soft political messages in songs (eg. "All we can do is ask them why"). This leaves me thinking instead asking why is this song so good.

14. Grover Washington Jr ft. Bill Withers – “Just the Two of Us” RedBullRacing

Hearing the first word of this is like sinking into a delightful bubble-bath. The sparkly lo-fi instrumentals give the sax and Bill the canvas to create bliss.

13. Amy Winehouse – “Tears Dry on Their Own” omgfridge

A quintessential breakup song that builds from "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". This turns the bliss of that song upside-down into a frown but still carries a fierce agency.

12. Dead Kennedy’s – “California Über Alles” Tonga Bob

Another political song in this batch, how hypocritical am I.. Worth it though as this melds industrial punk with surfer rock to dunk on fascists and hippies alike with satirical glee.

11. Magdelena Bay – “Secret (Your Fire)” and “Chaeri” – Tubbsfarquhar and Back One Out

I'd argue pop has arguably been the most experimental genre of the 2010's to now with artists like Grimes, Charli XCX, Yves Tumour and hyperpop acts like 100 gecs pushing the boundaries in particular. This is a prime example of the excitement I get when artists I love get nommed by others.

Seeing Deafheaven last year was a highlight! Hoping to see Opeth one day.
I've seen Opeth two or three times, they're always fantastic, haven't seen deafheaven

10-6
10. Tom Petty – “Refugee” TubbsFarquhar

I'm ashamed to have to bold this as I'd never consciously heard of it despite enjoying many Tom Petty tracks (I do wonder how many times I would've heard it without knowing before this contest). Should be enshrined in the Classic Rock Hall of Fame.

9. Wolfie’s Just Fine – “Get Away” hotchilli

Finally a hotchilli appearance! My favourite Billy target is undeniable here with a sensational nom that pays homage to classic horror films. I'm not really a horror fan (although seen a few that feature in the gnarly vid) but find it fascinating how this can sound both so upsetting and riveting at the same time. Kind of like watching a good horror film.

8. Unprocessed – “Blackbone” Ulahoopski

I mean this so has so much going for it, the blending of plethora of genres in particular the math rock elements that leaves the music nerd in me bewildered by how it can actually be played. Despite everything going on Unprocessed don't forget to make it sound incredible either.

7. Mr Kitty – “After Dark” Riviat

If one songs epitomises the list, it's this. "After Dark" is a lowkey, dark electronic comfort song that is all about letting yourself be vulnerable. So I dedicate putting my taste, or lack thereof, out there to it.

6. The Postal Service – “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight” por_please_ya

Geez this is the hardest entry yet to write for (there's one in the top 5 I'm absolutely dreading as well). Suffice to say this brings back so many memories from all spectrums of the emotional range. The best part of hearing this again though is knowing how far I've come since my first listen. Oh and the song is a 10/10 too.
