For a slightly different point of view (and a HUGE generalisation), but Western Sydney is pretty much Rugba League heartland and the League clubs throw a lot of money and development into this area. Add to that the fact that League clubs can sign kids at a younger age than AFL clubs and you can see why it is difficult to get traction. Conversely, the Swans catchment area of the Eastern Suburbs is more inclined towards Union (Manly and Redfern areas notwithstanding) which is dying in the butt at the moment - we even have private schools swapping Union posts with Aussie Rules ones.

Now, this latter scenario could be also attributed to the immense investment and effort that the Swans have put into this area at the same time that Union is struggling, but the situation still remains.

As far as ex-pats go, when I grew up there were a lot of ex-pats in the Hills District which resulted in them being a nursery for a number of AFL players (see Pennant Hills and Baulkham Hills/East Coast Eagles), so GWS can't really use that excuse.

However, to not have kids coming from the Riverina is purely on them and there is no excuse.

Funny to see the Giants laud their latest debutant as an "academy" player. Grew up in the Riverina and played for the Oakleigh Chargers last year. It is the exact opposite of what the academies should/intended to do.

10 or so years running their academy and the only proper AFL-listed prospect from their Western Sydney "heartland" is now running around for our reserves side.

And it produced at Connor O’Sullivan for last year’s draft. I think he had a couple of Bushrangers team mates who were also drafted but I don’t know (and can’t be bothered to look up) which side of the border they were from.

Are they playing, like, eight minute quarters? Seems like no sooner has a quarter started than the hooter goes for another break.

Edit: Now they seem to have resumed the third quarter...Time outs? Or eighths rather than quarters?

Yes, Liz.All AFLM & AFLW games today split their quarters due to the heat.

How's that Albury/Murray region going now for the AFL...

The region was fine before the Giants joined and it is more than fine after the Giants lost access to the area. There was no need to give them an area that was under the administration of AFL Victoria, part of the Murray Bushrangers system and with clubs that compete in Victorian leagues. It was not an underdeveloped region.

You are spot on there rob , looking forward to the returning Corowa v Albury Easter Saturday

Had a watch of the game

Goals
3 Chamberlain, 2 Ryan, Cabor, Hawkins, Andreacchio, Mclennan, King, Clifton, Rider, Baget-Juleff unknown (Chamberlain or Rider), Unknown

Notes:

Due to heat breaks were held in the middle of each quarter

Midfield of Harrison, Carmichael and King looked to be the most used set up with Mills-Vasas and Clifton sharing the ruck responsibilities. Overall worked realpy well with Harrison being the pick of the mids.

Backline functioned incredibly well, with KPD posts not being beaten once in the air. Was a very well organised effort.

Forward line had good supply and delivery from the mids and the wings which made it easier on our players

SKills were far better than last week.

Potential draftees 2024:

9. Harrison - did what he did best and won it at the coalface. Used handballs to outside players which opened up play. On of our best

28. Cochran - played mostly in defence by the looks and did what he had to. Nothing particularpy stood out in so far as no spectular plays or blunders

Underagers to watch:

10. Carmichael - Alot to like with Carmichael. Hard at it and good with ball in hand. Has previously played in defence as well.

30. Chamberlain - works up and doen as a KPF and able to clunk a solid mark. Has ability and would like to see him rip a game apart. Would ideally be used as a CHF.

33. King - potentially the most intriguing prospect since Gulden. Tall explosive midfielder who loves taking the game on. Can occasionally try too much (potentially from playing in u16s and mostering them through sheer size). Fantastic athlete. Can be inconsistent with disposal from OK to excellent. Will be one to watch
