What were the issues with it?

As conveyed to me, some girls did not get along with the then coach, who was at the Pies for the first three seasons. We lost several top players during his reign.

The club did not appear to put as much effort into the AFLW program as some other clubs. This is hard to quantify, but as an example, I met several girls in our first two seasons, and I was told that after some training sessions they had to prepare their own dinner at the club. This is when most players were still working full time. A small matter maybe, but telling.

Another issue is that we actually drafted well for the initial team and season. Jas Garner, Alicia Eva, Emma King, Jess Duffin - all gone within two years. While we brought in Lambert (also now gone) and Davey, and of course drafted Molloy in 2018 (also gone) - how much better could we have been if we’d held onto the best players rather than seeing the back of them?

Good on North, they have run their program well and exploited the opportunity they were given when entering the competition for the 2019 season. They nailed their recruitment - or ‘raiding’ of other clubs.

Beveridge seems teflon coated to me with the stories getting about. Goodwin a bit as well.
Agree on Nicks and Voss would be higher.
The best thing to do would be to get rid of Voss and give us Curnow and then they should rebuild

I think they should throw in Weitering too. They've got a real opportunity to emulate Richmond's glorious success in winning the draft.

Interesting.

I’d add a few others …

(1)

I hear from a Collingwood exec shortly before the start of the AFLW and SNL and he made it very clear that SNL was the main game and we were on a mission to recruit as many Diamonds as we could. By contrast AFLW “was Meg Hutchin’s thing”.

(2)

One huge mistake we made in the first season or so was trying to leverage our men’s program for tactical and strategic input. The skills of the women was totally different to the men (+ IIRC women are 16 a side?) and so the women could in no way be expected to follow anything remotely resembling the men’s tactics / strategy. Us punters can only appreciate this now with the benefit of hindsight, but I would have thought the professionals at our footy club could have seen this at the time.

(3)

There were times early in the program when the women didn’t have their own exec and they didn’t appear to be getting much attention.

(4)

A board governance lapse + the efforts of some members scuttled Dr Bridie O’Donnell’s appointment to the board. That was a shame, as our women’s programs could have benefited from her experience, passion and advocacy.

(5)

Us fans and members haven’t exactly been United behind the women’s program. It seems to be much better now than what it once was, but in the early days of AFLW / VFLW / SNL there was resentment by some who believed that the resources going into the women’s programs were compromising the mens’ programs.

It was probably necessary, but AFLW went to air way before it was ready. It was unwatchable, particularly as you pointed out they were attempting strategy and game styles that they weren't close to being able to play - wasn't just a Collingwood thing though.

On my list of more superficial issues - Eddie as President not attending our inaugural AFLW game in 2017 against Carlton. He had a previous commitment that he couldn’t change.

That also spoke volumes - and sent the wrong message to the women’s program.

The AFL isn't doing the women's game any favors either with their scheduling of the season. they really need to get that right

Ah yeah, IIRC he went to the boxing instead?

Really? I can’t recall - thought it was a more serious prior commitment.

Anyway, another black mark against Eddie in his second decade as president.

It was the Danny Green v Anthony Mundine fight.

Ed was commentating.

Beveridge saves himself with 1 decent season in every 3, and then the personality clashes inevitably come up in the 2 following years. Hopefully Ed Richards has had a gut full of him and makes the decision to come home in 2025.
