Seems like a fair question on the basis coming from an afl meh state to a footy mad state. As far as the rivalry goes, there may be been something of it several years ago, now it is a case of Melbourne being comfortable in its own identity as demonstrated by the previous comments about coffee. If there are any vestiges of a rivalry, don’t see it.It varies wildly.
There are coffee shops that do serve decent coffee. But unlike Melbourne they don’t need to do so to stay in business.
The best part about living in Sydney? Sydney doesn’t compare itself to anywhere else. The Melbourne - Sydney rivalry only exists in one direction.
Joel Cochran’s first interview was a good case study - he was asked by a journo how he felt moving from Sydney to Melbourne. He was utterly confused by the question - what is he supposed to say? No journo in Sydney would ever think to ask the question the other way around.
