Bombers don't look like they have a plan. Just grabbing players for the sake of it.

Agree, Swans look to be targeting players to meet their specific needs.

Our mature key defenders are Zerk-Thatcher (who's leaving) and Laverde who is undersized. The rest are developing. A mature KPD like Mckay is a big need.
Draper is injured, and our only other ruck is Nick Bryan who has only played 14 games. A mature Ruckman is badly needed for depth. Goldstein is a good fit.
Our forward line needs upgrading too. Tippa has retired and poor players Snelling/Guelfi are getting games. Gresham is a clear upgrade.
Our wingers are Martin and Durham.
There is definitely a spot for Duursma.

We'll see, I guess.

Screamed impatience to me. Much of the war chest spent and you haven't gotten a topline midfield, which is pretty much non-negotiable if you want to contend.

We have been going to the draft since 2020, and still have all of our picks this year, so I don't think we are being impatient like the Essendon of old.
We are trying to improve our midfield and have recently been spending 1st round picks on mids such as Tsatas, Hobbs, Perkins, and Nic Martin also looks good. But I agree we need more topliners for sure.

Getting close to 7000 days without a finals win is a tough way to learn patience.

You've recruited for a bounce, but to me the must haves for contention are an excellent midfield and an outstanding kpd to build your defence around. McKay is a bit of a Hail Mary for the latter. The rest are the cheaper and easier to get roles to fill out the team. I think you've blown a lot of dough on the edges when the core isn't in place. You need either one or two of those young mids to kick off big time, or your senior mids to jump a level or two and McKay to become something he's yet to be.

While I hate Essendon as much as anyone they did push us to the limit in 3 of our last 4 clashes.

That earns them some respect in my mind albeit I wasn't expecting them to fall in a heap at the end of the season.

While they might well have overpaid in terms of salary the flip side is they're still in possession of their 1st and 2nd round selections for 2023 as a consequence.

While McKay has his critics the reality is he'll still become Essendon's best key defender and reading an article online last night I was surprised how well he compared in some key stats to those considered the premier tall defenders in the competition.

Perhaps absence due to injury and the team he played for has devalued his ability in our mind.

Our club supposedly also had an interest in Goldstein so it's hard to be critical and with Phillips retiring and Draper still battling to overcome a groin problem he provides good ruck depth even at age 80.

While I'm happy with our pursuit of Schultz if you compare him with Graham there isn't a big difference between the two.

Graham across his career to date has tended to win more ball while Schultz is pulling ahead in terms of goals and tackles i50.

A season 2023 comparison.

By all reports a small forward was a need for Essendon.

With Zerk-Thatcher requesting a trade to Port acquiring Duursma should be pretty straightforward and at 23 has upside if he can fulfil his early career promise.

On paper they've improved their list with the only question now being by how much and was it value for money.

Only time will tell us that.

Gresham has been on the system 3 years longer.
Schultz well and truly beats him on goals, tackles inside 50. And leads all the mort important stats for a small forward IMO.

Schultz is still improving after a late start. Gresham is not

I’m not sold on the bombers drafting. McKay is ridiculous money for an average of 10 games a year

McKay has played 56 of those 71 games across the last 3 seasons though so his resilience and/or luck appears to be on the up.

Gresham and Schultz are only 3 months apart in age so I'm not discounting that a fresh start might be a positive for Gresham.

He averaged over 23 disposals and kicked 16.18 from 18 games in 2022 so that's not poor for a small half forward.

While he's not as good as the company he is in I read he's one of only a handful of current players averaging over 18 disposals and 1 goal a game across their career.

Anyway it's Essendon so who really cares at the end of the day.

Gresham was a strange one for them, but I understand McKay. Like Port with their big Esava contract, I can understand them taking a big money punt on a bloke with the potential to be top line KPD - all the top teams for a while now have had defences built around a star KPD. The ladder is pretty much following how good the team's KPD is and with Sydney this year and Carlton last year, teams fall apart when their star defender goes down.
