Patty Bowden was amogst one of our best players last year. Then after getting injured, patty found himself in the magoos for the rest of the year. contrary to popular belief i found him and Joel combined well and he was a handy goal sneak. chrissy hyde was another one i heard nothing about all year but he popped up in the coburg final so he must have played at least 5 games. Any thoughts????

Hes ok... I do not think he will be delisted but will have to work to get in the team.. Handy player at best IMO

I hope he wont be. although at 26 and been traded once he is at the crossroads. I rate him though he was one of the most improved players in the comp last year

If Paddy can play loose man in defence like he did at times with such aplomb in '06 and free up Polak to mark the best defender, like he has done with aplomb, Pad could be ok. Obvious move? - yes...therefore there must be more to this than is obvious to me at present. You'd have to suggest that it's unlikely Paddy is in Terry's equation.
Always liked Hydey but he is inconsistent. He should also be retained for depth but he really needs some new tricks in '08 or he may be up the bush before he knows it. Can be a very handy forward on occasion. I dunno why opposition teams aren't more aware that he only has one leg though. I think his issues are (1) speed and (2) endurance - if he doesn't become an effective tagger like Lingy (amazing endurance but absolutely no speed) he's in all sorts o' trouble...

I aint gonna mention Juddy (oooops, just did!)

I think Patty deserves one more season to try and prove that he can cut it in the AFL. However, if he could be used as trade bait for a younger player or pick would be great, but can't see this happening.
On the other hand, I totally rate Chrissy Hyde. i think he is a fantastic player and will be looking to get amongst the 1's again next year!

sort of where i was going with this. I think there must more than meets the eye with patty, clearly in our best 22 given his year last year. And yes if he means polak can play one on one and be a key defender where he is best suited then we should jump at it.

I'm not sure who Patrick Bowden would displace from our back-half next year.
Sure hands and combines with Joel well but perhaps Kel Moore has moved ahead of Paddy.
Moore has much better pace and hardness and is just as versatile IMO. Younger too...
If I had to choose for the future I would probably go against Bowden.

P. Bowden was a great rebound catalyst from defense. I think Terry went abit "youth" mad in 07; aggravating the likes of Gasper. Would love to see P. Bowden back to his architectural best in 08.

btw. im not trolling, i've met the bowdens and im a big fan of them on and off the field.

Well, when Polak learns to play CHB (if that ever happens), we'll need another floater. P Bo floats with the best of them and can kick goals to boot.

It's a big if IMO sky.

I'm not necessarily agreeing with the concept, more suggesting that Polak will probably not excel at being an accountable defender, so we'll keep him in that loose floating role, which leaves Bowden out in the cold.

I know, and I agree that Polak will not make an accountable defender, but RFC will head into 2008 believing that Polak can hold down a key post. And they'll trial him at that spot for a few weeks until they wake up to themselves. I reckon they'll end up chucking him forward. He'll play much like Bowden did in 2006, bouncing between either end depending on the state of the game.

Why I reckon Bowden will stay is for insurance. Moore, McGuane, Hughes and Schulz can't play the role Bowden can with anywhere near the effectiveness. If Polak goes down, we've got Bowden who can slot straight in (admittedly without the ruck relief). Play him off the bench and we've got a weapon we could use at either end of the ground. With Ray Hall gone, we've lost our only real utility...Bowden and Polak should be the first choice to replace him.

I don't dispute he had a good year, but like RW I'm a little suspect about his defensive game, the reason he was supposedly recruited to Richmond for.

We'll just have to wait and see...

once he is allowed to play a position, instead of playing everywhere we needed a presence, as was the case this year, even doing a bloody top job when called upon to take the center bounces, he will be just fine.

Miller is on record saying that we need a bit more size in the backline from this draft, so IMO he's either doubtful on Polak or McGuane - or both - holding down a genuine key position role. He's also said he's not that concerned about our ruck stocks or KP forwards, so yeah, as you say, that really leaves Polak's future role wide open.

It's probable, he does provide solid depth...I guess the major question is whether or not he's worth persevering with from an injury perspective.

He was certainly a handy pickup for the price Cogga. The ball's in his court now as to how far he can go...another big pre-season certainly won't hurt.

Joel didn't play a role in the goals he kicked though. Think he is a much better as a back/forward pocket utility player like what huntrer does at west coast.
