Not anything exciting at all. Wilson best on again, should come in for Wagner. Erasmus better but with shaky disposal. Throught driz built into the game well towards the end. Had some very good kicks i50. Wouldn't mind having him back pending fitness.

Just noticed Brady Grey didn't play, must be injured. Having him as a development coach for our 1-4 year midfielders isnt great. Bit of a step down from Corey who is a step down from Josh Carr in his role. Really freo need some experienced assistants I think. A fresh set of eyes from successful teams.

Yeah I do find it interesting that our development coach is someone who could barely get a game for the team as a player...you'd think if they were any good at that job they would've used to get themselves a game rather than taking up coaching jobs at 27 years old.

Also typing this out just made me realise that he's only 27. There's 11 guys on our list older than him. I've always loved him but how was he the best person for the job.

Apparantly he is development for 1-4 year players, and I would say you don't need to be a good player to be a good coach Lyon and Clarkson weren't exactly all time greats. Its possible his role is quite minimal and very part time so we could only get someone who is young. I know I just mentioned I'd like to get some outside blood in the mix, but just thought of Chris Mayne, reckon he'd be a good fit.

See I reckon we have more than enough ex-Dockers involved with the club. Bell, Longmuir, Mzungu, Grey, Hayden (I think). I think we need more people who can bring outside experiences to add other ways of doing/thinking.

What really is the role of a development coach? I always assumed it to be general skill/positioning development, which I feel like you would have to be a good player yourself to do well in it. In terms of head coaching all you need is a good football brain in terms of bigger picture. You don't really need good playing skills to understand the game well.

But thats all my assumptions like I said, no idea what a development coach actually does.

Like Boyd, Graham, Corey, Garlick, Murphy? In a football operation of about 20 people those 4 are the only ones and JL, Mzungu, Grey and Bell have all had experience at other clubs. Non-issue. If Carr, De Boer, Barlow, Mundy etc fit a role for us and were the best candidates I'd take them.

Bob Murphy needs to be given more free reign, and we made a real mistake (deliberate by Bell I reckon) in not giving Hayden a senior assistant role, and offerring Troy Cook and Mzungu more of a role with our Peel and development teams. Roger Hayden had been close to one of the most experienced assistant level coaches going around, and had real positive impact across multiple different roles. He was being actively promoted for the top of the level 4 coaching graduate program - but that will have dropped off now he isn't actively assistant coaching an AFL team. Sad that we have sidelined him.
