Donna Nelson was convicted of carrying 2kg of methamphetamine in the bottom of a suitcase, in to Japan last year.

Her defence team told Nelson's trial in a Japanese court last week the 58-year-old had travelled to Japan to meet a man known only as Kelly, with whom she had met and formed a relationship with online over a two-year period.

Nelson said she believed the case was a sample item for Kelly's fashion business, and had no knowledge of the drugs that were later found at the bottom of the bag.

The court eventually found, in one small concession, that Nelson was a victim, however she was labelled "untrustworthy" for failing to declare the suitcase was hers, and claiming she was travelling for business not love.

Nelson also appeared to have ignored early warning signs which could have prevented her downfall.

Interesting the media refers to her as a grandmother or nanna instead of a 58yo.

What's wrong with it? She is a grandmother which implies middle aged or older and serves as a warning, that your nanna can be a victim of these types of scams.

Predators often target older men and women. My cousin who confided in me on this new relationship she was in, nearly got caught up in one and was ready to travel o/s, red flags started popping up that made me nervous with the last straw being that he asked for a copy of her passport.

I didn't want to hurt her feelings but it had to be.

I (and perhaps others?) hear the term grandma or nanna and think of an elderly, frail old woman, vulnerable, perhaps not quite as sharp as she used to be. A soft target, if you will. 58yos have, if not grown up with the internet, had the internet for longer than they haven't, are usually mentally fit, and often hold very senior positions - some of them even run companies.

It depends on the angle the writer/editor/government is trying to portray.

You're so obvious.

The court has accepted here, that she was a victim.

A victim, but I also agree with the ruling that in this day and age she should have had more wits about her.

Very lucky it was Japan and not somewhere else in Asia. Hopefully let out in a year or two for good behaviour (if they do that in Japan, I'm not sure)

Yeah my mates Mother in Law was almost a victim too.

They had to sit her down and convince her it was a scam, thankfully she didn't send money when given the usual fake sob story about hospital fees and what not. She was just lonely as her husband wasn't giving her attention she was needing.

The practice doesn't appear to get a lot of attention in our press but Japan still executes around 5 people per year.

A reduction in her sentence to six years is pretty good imo considering she was sentenced to death, so I'm thinking she might have to do most of it.
