Four days on and I'm still pissing myself with laughter over this.

Go Norf, the basketcase that keeps on stinking up the competition.

Oh, this goes much further than Norf just giving up their F1 for our F2 & 27. Much, much further.

It's a confluence of mismanaged and totally near-sighted strategy by their list management team.

They went to the AFL for a handout in 2022 and were granted two end of first round picks with the caveat that they had to be used in trades for established players, which were used to get in Griffin Logue and Darcy Tucker.

On top of that they were allowed 2 extra spots on their rookie list which were used on Hamish Free and Daniel Howe. They still keep that ability to have those 2 extra rookie spots.

Now what is absolutely astounding is that they were given another three end of first round picks last year, one to be used in 2023 and two for 2024, these picks however didn't have the caveat that they had to used solely for trades, they could take players directly from the draft, there was a small rider that the 2 x 2024 end of 1st round picks could be lost if they improved their ladder position substantially.

So instead of banking those two end of first round picks for this year they used them in trades for Zac Fisher and Dylan Stephens.

They could have had picks 2-20-21-25-62 going into this draft and retained their F1.

But no, the list managers have completely ****ed it up and left them with 2-27-62 and no F1!!!

That has to be one of, if not the worst, the most monumental of ****ups in the history of the draft.

In summary, they actually thought they were going to improve this year so didn't hold those picks 🤣🤣🤣

Man!

They could have had...

FOS
Armstrong
Trainor
Whitlock

And kept their F1

Or bundled up a couple of those picks and scored their sweetheart in Tauru along with another KPP.

And kept their F1

GEEZUS!
Trainor & Armstrong went before the PP. They ended up shifting to 26 & 27. In fact they gave their F1 to get their own Pick back.

A blind mans dog could see they weren't going to improve, next year will be 2 years and they still won't be at the stage where those picks could have been lost.

If it was me, then I'd be saying, '2024 is a deep draft' let's hold those picks as insurance, but if we improve then we don't need the handouts, we're on our way.

Just examples

Was the Brisbane pick 20 part of that package? If so, then that's just the icing on the cake.

Shanahan and the better Whitlock was still there, plus they had the opportunity of bundling especially if 25 is added in which was used on Daniel.

Yeah Armstrong was Brisbane pick. Trainor was Port pick received from Freo.

If they held all 3 they could have got both Whitlocks and Shanahan lol

there's no 5 year plans or bold strategies with norf the plan is to just keep bottoming out until, through pure chance, they manage to assemble a competitive team. thats genuinely what it looks like from the outside.

Think they are just so used to hand outs both financial and draft concessions. Just fold em. 19 teams is too many, fold em when Tassie enter the comp.

In fairness those 2 x end of F1 were always going to be traded away because there was no guarantee they’d actually get them. They’d have been ridiculed if they held them, won 8 games in 2024, then lost those picks which were open to use the year prior.

Every single club would’ve used those picks last year. However, using those picks on Fisher and Stephens, then trading 25 for Caleb Daniel … those are decisions that can be ridiculed freely - not to mention using one of the other compo picks on Tucker (I think Logue was a decent trade beset by bad luck).

There was nothing stopping them from trading those 2 picks (19 & 20) for other picks and maintaining a presence in this years draft. If we identified that this draft was strong and deep then they would have too.

This so called strategy smacks of Clarkson having too much say in list management.
