Analysis Pick Mitch Harvey now, not in 2017!!

Last year I posted that I wanted us to pick Mitch Harvey for the Rd 23 game against Freo at Subi to bash and crash into Sandilands to help out Lobbe so he had a bit of a rest. I was criticised for my call, no dramas, its a forum for free opinions, we didnt pick him, Sandilands absolutely dominated Lobbe they went on a 9 goal unanswered run in the 3rd quarter and early last, we do our usual comeback, but lose, miss top 4 and therefore best chance to make a GF.

Against Freo in the semi we should have lost the game by half time but they didnt bury us because of bad goal kicking, so in the second half most of our goals come from tricky, freaky snaps near the boundary line and a couple from great runs along the boundary and kicking from way out wide. Similar story in the PF re bad goal kicking, but this time by us, and still kicking freaky goals.

We have been lulled into the belief that this style of play is sustainable long term. It isnt!!

We need to start structuring up correctly and playing more sustainable realistic footy. Gray and Wingard will do enough tricky, freaky stuff but we have to get the rest of the team playing percentage footy.

We need a gorillia and we need a proper forward line. Pick Mitch Harvey and tell him to play deep and he doesnt have to play past the CHF square line. Sam Gray isnt a 100 gamer, yet we pick him and expect him to have to beat Harry Taylor for maybe 20% of the game.

Against Geelong they had 3 true KPD's who had played over 700 games between them and we played Schulz, and then told Westhoff to drift all over the place including spending a bit of time on Blicavs. You cant win with that forward line against that defence especially when you throw in another 700 games from Mackie, Enright and Kelly - although we lucked out with Kelly going down.

If Harvey has 5 kicks within 52m from goal on reasonable angles, I reckon he will slot 4 of them.

Play him against a weak Carlton team at the MCG, give him the bye off and then play him on the smaller SCG where he doesnt have to run as far.

I have found out enough about the sort of AFL player Sam Gray will make. I want to find out what sort of player Mitch Harvey will make. Tom Hawkins got gifted games when he probably wasnt ready. It's not a sin to blood someone early. If Butcher is out of favour with the selection committee then Harvey has to play. The season is as good as over for finals. We arent going to find out any more about or win any more games with Sam Gray, Jake Neade, Aaron Young or Paul Stewart playing in the forward line in place of a KFP.

Now is the time to find out what sort of AFL player Mitch Harvey will make.

Would love to get games into one of our young forwards, but Shaw is always injured and Mitch is apparently not fit enough. I was spewing over the missed chance to give Clurey some top level experience last year when Bobby and Trengove were down in the middle of last year (also the fact that our structure was shithouse). Talls need games!!

Not sure whether Mitch will be too much of a liability at this point though, there has been a lot said about his tank, or lack of. We were bitten on the arse hard after ridiculously playing Redden who could barely run out a half of AFL footy.

All for throwing him in against Carlton, you could probably carry a few against a team as bad as they.

Love the concept but I don't believe he's yet fit enough for AFL and I think We would be throwing him to the wolves too early.
Dont get me wrong I love the kid, but I need to see more to be convinced he's ready to play one of the hardest positions on the ground in modern football.

I like it. Have some aggression and flair and start it with selection.
Everything we do at the moment is 'safe', starting with a forward line made up of mature players who aren't actual natural forwards but are there to provide defence. One of those maybe, not four.

So what. We find out how much ticker he has now, not in 2017 when we have invested 4 years into him.

I'm with you REH but realistically if Harvey struggles to play 3qtrs of SANFL he will barely get through 1 in the AFL.

Depending on how Howard goes the next couple weeks he might be worth a shot. He was good in the pre-season. If we play Howard at half back and Butcher up forward like the team sheet suggests, I give up.

I'm on board.

Part of me wants to be careful with the kid because he's gonna be something, but I don't think we'd do too much damage to him if it didn't pan out.

If Ryder doesnt come up i'd play Harvey against Carlton
I'll actually get to see Harvey play today, so will see if that looks reasonable. But my gut says if we're playing around with the bottom 2-3 selections this is the sort of brave development step we need to take.

I like what Howard did in the preseason, saw him play 3 games in a row live and he was excellent, but at the moment he is a skinny version of Westhoff. He's not what we need at the moment.

**** I hope Howard spends most of the preseason in the weights room because with his aggressive competitive streak and another 10 kgs he might be the long term answer. We need a big body who will take contested marks and or provide contested marking situations so that the freaks like Gray and Wingard can do their thing once the ball spills to the ground from those marking contests.

Look at the Cats last night. How many goals did they kick from the goal square or 20m out because they went long and quickly to a one on one marking competition from Hawkins and Kersten? I'd put my money on 4 goals from the goal square and another 3 or 4 from 20m out but not in the goal square. Hawkins and Kerstens didnt have a great game but they provided great structure which other players could take advantage of.

And how did that work when we played players that wernt ready this year so far.
So we play Sam Gray on Harry Taylor every week?? Plus the first 2 games we played 5 - yes 5 players who had played 1 quarter of preseason football between them. One player with questionable fitness doesnt effect the team like 5 do.

If we're ever gonna play him, this would be the week. Jamison and Rowe are both total bollards, so it's not like we'd get punished on the rebound.

Realistically it's just not the sort of move that Kern has ever made though. If good old mad scientist Choco was still coach, then maybe.

Hopefully he kicks a bag today and really presses his case. Been solid all year, but probably needs a BOG to make him pickable.

Our season is pretty much cooked as it is, might as well chuck a few young bloods in there and give them a crack. The worst that could happen is he only lasts half a game, gets battered, bruised and is sore the next week.

I don't think that Mitch Harvey alone will fix our forward line, we need a proper structure and game plan, but having another tall to give Schulz a break will go a long way.

Maybe they won't play him because they think they'll destroy his confidence....? From what I've read he hasn't set the world on fire and would probably be a liability when it comes to chasing and forward pressure. We've heard and observed that the gulf btwn local and afl is huge. Guys like Gray, Stewart, Young etc have shown that. Not sure he would offer anything better at this stage.

If our season keeps going south then I'd love to see guys like Clurey, Hoon and Harvey get game time.

Hopefully Harvey keeps playing so well he demands selection.*

* under the current regime doesn't guarantee selection.

You won't get an arguement from me Nick, all Mitch has to do today is take some strong competitive marks ( which he has been doing for most weeks now ) kick 3 or 4 sausage rolls, and he would be in my team.

Obviously he would have to be camped inside the 50 to be effective, plus have at least 1 crumber of the Robbie Gray, Wingard quality at his feet, but unfortunately I doubt the current cross country game plan will suit him or any other marking forward, so it probably won't happen.

Agree with Macca that next week against the blue baggers would be the ideal time to do it.

FFS even Choco gave fabulous Fabian De Luca 8 or 9 games to find out he was a king spud, surely Harvs has far more upside than him.
