The recent landslide in the PNG highlands is much worse than was initially reported, it's now reported to kill hundreds. The main road to this remote region was severed and tribal clashes along the aid convoy route are hampering the delivering of aid. Much of the ground remains unstable. What a terrible mess. I hope the CoA are offering real support.

I couldn't find anywhere obvious to post this. I couldn't find a PNG or Pacific islands general thread. PNG is so heavily populated now, between 10-17 million people (guesstimates, not mine). More folks in PNG than all the islands in the south pacific including NZ. It's liable to get a bit rowdy in the future.

The Diplomat has an article discussing the problems in depth. eg
'The smaller C-130 Hercules and C-27J Spartan transport planes are to fly supplies from the capital to Mount Hagen, the capital of Western Highlands province, from where the cargo would travel by road to neighboring Enga province.
That plan took a blow with news that a bridge between Mount Hagen and Wabag collapsed on Tuesday, officials said. The cause of the collapse was not explained, but it was unrelated to the landslide. A detour would add two or three hours to the journey, the migrant agency said. Urgent efforts were underway to repair the bridge.'
