I've created a poll here for BF Fremantle board users to have a say on their opinion about whether to implement and use a Red Card in AFL and AFLW matches for serious and severe on-field offences.

An identical poll also appears on the main BigFooty AFL board (Umpiring, MRP, Tribunal, Rules) for all users.

I agree with the ideal, perfect dream model of a red card system everyone is thinking of. But...
  • FAIRNESS - the umpires are not capable of implementing it in an unbiased manner. Our club would fare worse than others, with players red carded for more minor incidents.
  • EVENNESS - If a red card system was in place last week Gaff would probably not have gotten a red card because the umpires didn't see it. Michael Johnson probably would have gotten a red card.
  • WEDGE - Also, it is a wedge opportunity. It will start out as something for the 1 or 2 worst off ball incidents of the year. Then someone on their high horse about head knocks will campaign for more red cards for head knocks. Then punches... You know where this is going. before too long it will replace the 50m penalty.

As far as I am aware all aspects of footy in WA has a red card system....it just really needs to be policed really well. In all those cases it is the umpires responsibility to issue them. I'm not opposed to it but I don't think it should be judged by an umpire(s) alone.
