Post-Game Frustrations and thoughts

Full credit to the WCE tonight. Absolutely dominated us.

Im writing this in an obviously extremely frustrated mood... keep that in mind.

Corey Mckernan, Drew Petrie & Shannon Watt
The three most frustrating players to watch. Corey did okay in the ruck, but no where near as good as Hale. McKernan needs to get dropped to Port Melbourne and stay there until he proves his worth. Bring in an uninjured Perry in his place, and allow Colbert or Brown to float around the ground as needed.
Petrie, apart from that stupid undiscplined bullcrap early in the game, didnt contribute, didnt show any leadership, and lacked general football skills. How many chances can one bloke get. He really needs to be dropped for a few weeks. Perkins the ideal replacement
And as for Shannon Watt... well, i hate people having a go at him because he really is in the toughest position on the field, but god damn... early in the game Q Lynch was just dominating him.

Nathan Thompson
A night we'd all like to forget. Dont want to jump down his throat, because he did better than McKernan & Petrie... but really needs to lift, and soon.

Daniel Wells, Adam Simpson & Shagga Grant
Forget Petrie. These three guys need to be promoted to be our core Leadsership group. Wells needs to make himself a leader to our young 'roo generation' guns. Simpson needs to keep doing what he does best, and thats working hard consistently. Shagga Grant is in scintillating form, and really has the intencity we need to lift when we're under the hammer a bit.

Leigh Colbert & Leigh Brown
If they can stay uninjured and play a consistent brand of football all year, i'd like to see them rotating around the ground as necessary. Both guns.

Jess Sinclair, Michael Stevens & Brent Harvey
All three of these guys have the potential to explode and do something special. I just hope that they realise this potential more often.

Junior Motlop
Knows where the goals are, and is a truly exciting player.

Seemingly our most accurate kick at goal. Love him.

Positives, IMO:

Sansbury - Beat Sampi pretty comfortably. Sampi had about 5 kicks. Moved well, moved quickly and used it well.

Hale - Will be a gun.


That's it.

Midfield was smashed so hard I can't think of one player in the rotation that played what I would class as a good game.

Harvey - Absolute non-entity

Grant - Missing

Simmo - Ok, I spose.

Rawlings - IMO, a tagger and no scope for much else.

Wells - Did some good things.

Harris - Crap


Baring in mind, none of this has me worried about the season. All these guys were great 7 days ago, and we know they can play. Tonight, they were out thought, out muscled, out run and smashed by a group that worked harder.

We Talked all summer about the joys of the amount of talls and goalkickers we have at our hands - not even into home and away season and we kick 5 goals in perfect weather in a game of football,and simply lack a marking forward - work that one out.

Brett Jones is an absolute goer for them. Tough and hard, and a strong body........now how do we get Chad to get some of his brother's physical attributes?

As for frustrations, just another wasted opportunity to give McIntosh and Grima some valuable game time in the seniors. If Thompson is injured, and can't play round one say, and McKernan is hopelessly out of form, McIntosh will almost have to play in round one, without having had a run in the pre-season. Doesn't make sense to over look him every week.

Only players who played well/OK:

Hale-Wasn't too impressive in the ruck but did some pretty good things around the ground.
Wells-Got alot of the ball in the second quarter and his worlk rate was pretty good. Didn't play too good a game but was still one of our best players.
Sinclair-Provided good run out of the backline and IMO was the only player who actualy tried hard in the last quarter.
Brown-Our defence was woeful tonight but he took some good grabs at times. Not sure who his opponent was, think it was Seaby.
Grant-Played a bit in the fowardline and midfield and was probably our best player. Presented well.
Makepeace-Would've got beaten by an extra 5 goals without him. Along with Sinclair provided good run out of the backline and drifted foward a few times and scored 1.1
Sansbury-Pretty impressive, mostly in the second half although didn't really do a good job on his man (Sampi) but got alot of the ball and was a good contributor.
Perkins-Should be promoted, tried hard and did some handy stuff around the ground.
Simpson-Got alot of clearances and racked up a bit of the ball. OK overall.
Motlop-Even though he hurt his shoulder he was still our best foward.
LeCras and Stevens did some handy stuff around the gorund as well.

Rest were woeful.

Sansbury was good. Keep saying there's a spot in our best 22 for him if we just let him have time on the ground. Up there with Mick for our most penetrating kick.

Petrie has to go. I love the guy, but he is just ordinary. Staker sunk every ball without Petrie getting a sniff, made Drew pull his pants down and run around the table, and ran off with the footy while he did it.

If it was 18 on 18 tonight, then I can't fathom the sheer amount of loose men they had on every single square centimetre of the ground. And it's a big ground.

It was only a preseason game. Although one North coach got sacked after a not too dissimilar performance in the preseason. Not that it means anything for Laidley. Just a reality check that we may have needed.

Hope it doesn't fukc up our membership big time...

Sounds like the absolute perfect definition of Woosh's style, actually.
Oddly enough, on the way home I was thinking precisely the same thing about us playing like a team full of Worsfolds, although perhaps that leaves me in a slightly different emotional state to Michelle.

Too all the reasonable roo fans (and gee there were a lot of you at subi tonight!) commiserations and good luck for the season proper. Try not to take it to heart, I think/hope you won't be the last lot to get a pumping from us at Subi this year.

Liked your post and agree with most of that, but I can't see how much further we can promote Adam Simpson!

I've got a question: How can a team that gets so anally r*ped by the umpires have a player (Wells) that gets treated like a prince?? There were absolute sh_it decisions early in the game that started the rot, but Wells must have got 10 frees at least.

On the players, I think the biggest mistake made was playing Colbert. (Hey I'm not a fan. I think he's overrated by north fans. Yeah he does some good things and is courageous, but he is very slow and sometimes thinks slow) There were a few times when a few of his mistakes cost us goals. I wouldn't have played him.

I enjoyed Hale in the forward 50. I didn't watch him in the ruck (too drunk to take notice) but I'd say he got hammered. Forwards were ******** which wasn't helped at all by ******** delivery or no delivery at all because the ball didn't get up there. I think sinclair is our smartest player. I don't care if he doesn't get many touches, he knows how to use it. Wells was our only good midfielder, sorry, make that our only midfielder (whoever was on Simpson absolutely smashed him because I barely saw him all night). I enjoyed watching sansbury. Grant (Calling him mr. fumbles from now on after last night and last weeks performances of repeatedly fumbling the ball) didn't do much, nor harvey. I think our big problem is that the young guys had ******** games which might mean that they are only getting touches when the whole team is playing well (Like the 2000 Essendon side).

Motlop is a classy player but needs to toughen up.

Basically, WC thrashed us. We played SIGMA (sorry, its a personal joke involving a greasy wog harvey norman salesman)

I was expecting to be beaten, but that was bad.

I think this is a reality check for some north fans.

Very dissappointed with the spirit of the club last night - there was literally no leadership shown by the "leaders" of the club. Without Archer - we are a rudderless ship. Undisciplined acts by Petrie (Cory Mckernan mark 2) and other players like Brent Harvey (when he cannoned into the back of the west coast players) reminded me of Hawthorn last year and i got to say they will need to change their mindset if they are going to do well this year.

I am impressed by the youth though, can't help but admire Wells, Motlop (although he does require a reality check from time to time), Sansbury, Perkins and Le Cras. However, it will be some time until this playing group is as adhesive and professional of the team of the late 90s.


As for the talls, Petrie and Mckernan were just extremely dissappointing - only solution for McKernan is for him to play the rest of his contract with the Magoos - because the more we play him, the less experience the younger brigade will receive. Frankly he is an Uber-dud - i was very pi55ed off when the Roo's traded him back - i knew it was a bad decision and we lossed out on the deal. As for Petrie - i don't know what he can do to fix his problem - i guess it all comes down to getting back to basics - how to mark, kick and contest.

There is a long way to go before we are contenders and i hope that someone at Arden Street can properly harness the right spirit, attitude and lead these young potentials into a winning side.

All I can say is North were last night GIVEN the ULTIMATE FOOTY LESSON. That my friends shows us how to PLAY FOUR QUARTERS of HARD RELENTLESS Premiership style football. Face it folks, North were given a REALITY Check. Any other team would of been SMASHED by the same margin and more. I am not fustrated. I quite admired the way West Coast played. North had too many guys not prepared to play a team game and that was the underlining element. I'm not going to kick North down as some of you have HUNG NORTH to dry. Why ?? we have 22 rounds to rebound and if North aren't prepared to PLAY FOUR QUARTERS of HARD RELENTLESS Premiership style football, then we be counted as a pretender along with other teams that will cp the same FOOTY LESSON by the Woosher Eagles.

Long season, things will change. This is a good thing to happen now. Our form was no-where near the calibre JYD wants us to play. Goes to show that to play 1 and a half quarters of HARD footy will NOT be ENOUGH against any SERIOUS team who WANT to wIN !

Hell, I didn't expect us to win, but I expected us to at least put up a fight. How did the Eagles get so many free players around the field? What's the deal with us handballing ourselves into trouble? Why wasn't Hale left in the ruck?

I tend to agree with Vlad76 in that it's a bit of a reality check for us. Only Sansbury and Hale could be happy with their performances, althought Grant, Brown, Colbert and Wells tried hard.

We looked gone at half-time - we just seemed to be physically and mentally spent. Good teams perform in all sorts of environments, and with the way the Eagles were playing in the heat and the humidity, it just seemed that we didn't want to face it. Our lack of mental toughness worries me. Most teams can make the finals, and we really should be able to do that. But it's the mentally tough teams that go on and win Premierships - I just don't see that mental toughness in the side right now.

On the other hand, the Eagles looked like they could have gone on and played another game right away.

Sold his teamamtes into trouble, fumbled alot, poor foot skills, lost his opponent on numerous occasions. Shouldn't be in our best 220.

Wasn't just a case of misperformance on his behalf like not like alot of our other lads, as the talent is conspicuiously noexistent with him.
