This is a terrible rule, seriously.

1 team has massive motivation.
1 team has to try and contain their lead and not get injuries.

Brisbane just look to have copped 4 injuries in 12 minutes trying to run out a game that was already iced.

Melbourne and West Coast had a similar game with Melbourne’s role reversed previously a few seasons back.

Restarting the game is massively advantageous to the team that needs to try and close the gap.

Perhaps put an 18 point buffer in for whether or not to restart the game. If a margin is large, it’s not worth cooling all the players down to warm them back up in 8 minutes and run the game out, perfect storm for injuries.

Oh, and they should definitely update the rulebook to say 60 minutes, not 30 minutes.

What’s the general consensus on this?

What horse s**t. It’s no more advantageous to one team over the other and the fact the Lions almost got rolled just shows it wasn’t actually over

Just weak excuses for one team running the game out til the end while the other put the cue in the rack
Pretty much lol
It's not like one team is getting more time than the other. They're still playing on the same field, at the same time

Also, we didn't start our good run until there was about 4 minutes left - 8 minutes after play had resumed. In that 8 minutes brisbane had 2 behinds to our 1 goal (more scoring shots)

I’m going to try and find some further stats on other matches this has happened in, but of the sample size of Lions v Dees and Eagles v Dees, it’s pretty clear that the team who is heavily trailing has pretty much had a free punch to try and catch up.

Regardless though, cooling all players down and then warming them back up for 12 minutes of game time when there’s a 40 point margin is a joke.

Couldn’t even call 2 matches a sample size.

It still makes no difference though there is the exact same incentive for both teams to win the match and it’s no excuse for one team going at 50% when the game is still on the line.

Whether there is a break in the game or not the team behind is always incentivised to play more attacking to give themselves a chance. Should we just call off every match once a team leads by 40 because it’s not fair that they choose to take it easy and protect a lead rather than play the game right out? It’s just weak excuses for a poor performance

Raging Lions supporter angry about yet another classic Brisbane choke.

So if the power goes out 1 minute into the 3rd quarter and Melbourne were 19 points up that's insurmountable? Sure if that'd happened instead you wouldn't have made this post.

The rule is fine. It's also only been used 3 times and discussed usage of it one. There was last night, the game in Perth in 2021, a game in either the NT or Cairns around 2009-2011 that had its start delayed as the lights failed before the game, which may have also involved Melbourne, and in the late 90s Adelaide were playing Richmond, one side was 1 point up at 3 quarter time, due to lightening they discussed abandoning the game, whoever was behind obviously wasn't going to forfeit, they played on and the side behind ended up winning. I see no problems with it. It works fine.

We didn’t choke, we still won a game I was expecting us to get smacked in. It’s just a thread for discussion.

Personally, my thoughts are that the AFL needs to pick a margin and a ‘time left’ amount from a health and safety perspective, if the game stops within those parameters it’s all over. Your example of the start of the third quarter is very different to 12 minutes left in the 4th. Tonight’s game and the Perth game really opened the players up to heightened injury potential.

Lions had all the momentum. Would have won the game by 10 goals if the lights hadn't gone out.
If they went in with a 3 or 4 goal lead (rather than 7 goal lead), Melbourne wouldn't have got any closer IMO, as the game would still have been up for grabs.

Lions were without a doubt at a disadvantage.

If you can still be beaten then the game is still up for grabs. Teams only have themselves to blame if they put the cue in the rack

I wonder if this game will come up at the annual "Should We Have A Night Grand Final" meeting?
They just need backup generators at major stadiums, especially if the GF ever switches to night time. It might not be feasible at all grounds or for lightning so they probably need a duckworth Lewis system too where it’s a time vs margin so it is fair if it gets called off.

From memory, I think there was a game in the 90’s between Essendon & St kilda that got finished mid week when the lights went out just after half time. I think it didn’t do either team any favours though the following game.

Yes, then the made this rule, and those 4 are the times it's been considered since.

Unusual circumstances. Higher risk of injury. Up by almost 7 goals with 12mins to go. The Demons got lucky.

An incomplete game should be considered null and the contest decided by a coin toss

there is far less chance of injury

Some of the clauses look unfinished, eg d and f. Is lightning the only dangerous weather incident? I think a, b, c are okay, fair.

I don't think the leading team should gain extra score based on a sample size of 2 examples. The same event affects both sides, which side deals with it better will flourish. Vicissitudes, they can't be predicted. The texture and spice of life.

Rules seem reasonable.

Only adjustment I'd consider is that if the delay is expected to be longer than the remaining time, then they should look to call the game off, depending on how close the scores are. ( so if there is 5 mins to go, and it'll be 15 mins before play can restart, call it over, unless it's within, say, 2 goals).

If a team cannot provide a stadium with reliable lighting for night games in this day and age then either they should only play day games or if the lights fail they forfeit the game.

As this is now the 3rd time there has been a blackout at the Gabba in recent times - BBL game in 2019, Ashes test in 2021 and now last night - something has to be done to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Options
1. Play all games during the day
2. Play all Lions games away
3. Play all Lions' home games at Carrara

If the lights go out at Docklands during a bulldogs home game, is that the doggies fault?

Remember that the roof is closed during day games too, so lighting would be required for all games there.
