No sign of Naitanui on the training track as yet

Ginbey in a group doing handballs only along with Waterman, Duggan, Dewar, Hurn, Bazzo and a few others

Allen, Chesser, Sheed , Jamieson and Petruccelle walking/jogging laps away from the rest

Naitanui out with the handball crew now - Barrass, Barnett, Baker, Shuey also there

Bazzo trained with the main group for about an hour before going off to run the boundary at around half pace

Fair to say he’s short of a gallop and will need a bit of time to regain full fitness after probably not doing a lot for a month for obvious reasons

Preseason going well thus far.

Long Version:

Got a win ✅

No serious injuries in the game ✅

Peeps bitching about young players not yet having reached their full potential ✅

Peeps bitching about experience players not being available for all the preseason games ✅

The Coaches being criticised for not playing players in their true positions ✅

Game plan being criticised as all has not been revealed in a preseason game ✅

Excellent start and reactions / posts mostly on par with what would be expected from the fans after the first preseason hit, out when the finished article hasn’t yet been revealed . 👍

Short version:

We beat a team that should be finals contenders this season and look better placed than we were 12 months ago.

Love that the club streamed today’s session, great initiative.

Plenty of players on light duties today, lots of them didn’t train fully. Monday’s are usually lighter sessions though so I’m not reading too much into most of this stuff:
  • Session began at 9:30 and all players were inside by 11
  • Jack Williams was the only player I didn’t see today
  • Waterman, Ginbey, Shuey, Duggan, Luke Edwards, Hurn, Barnett, Baker, Bazzo and Dewar warmed up away from the main group. Naitanui joined this group briefly but then headed inside after about 10 minutes.
  • Allen, Petch, Sheed, Jamieson and Chesser ran laps away from the main group to start the session.
  • Petch trained fully afterwards which is a good sign, but the rest went inside not long after. Chesser in particular went inside after only 15 mins of running - just load management I’m sure.
  • Barrass warmed up by himself and looked to be testing his marking ability - a coach was kicking the ball hard at him and he had to try mark it. He did this for about 20 minutes before heading inside without training with the main group.
  • Sheed did what looked like a mini fitness test away from the main group to start the session - sprints, high knees, agility etc - and was on light duties for the rest of the session
  • Darling came out after about half an hour and did some light rehab work with Jordyn Baker on the opposite oval. It wasn’t anything strenuous but neither looked restricted by any injury.
  • Baker in particular did more training today than I’ve seen him do in weeks. Was able to do some shots at goal on the run later in the session so looks like his training loads are elevating after spending pretty much the whole of February doing nothing.
  • Gov went inside around 10:15 and looked quite sore. Hopefully nothing serious - sometimes he just looks sore naturally
  • Jones trained fully after missing the scratch match last week
  • Bazzo warmed up separately, then joined the main group for some kicking practice, before finishing the session with some light running. As Keys alluded it looks like he needs to build up his fitness again after a few weeks off training.
Again, hard to know how much to read into any of this stuff. Just thought I may as well share what I saw since I was there anyway.

Nothing to really add to what LittleFires said other than to say Gov did look a little unhappy at times through the session and spent a fair bit of time talking to trainers at different stages. Wouldn’t surprise me in the least if he fairs out the Crows game

As mentioned Naitanui was out there only briefly but as much ch as he wasn’t doing a whole lot, he didn’t look hindered in his movements in any way

Hough and Burgiel spent a good 10 minutes at the end of the session with a couple of the development coaches (Brennan and Pratt I think) going through a few things and practicing their outlet/switch kicking

Jones trained and only missed the Port game due to a funeral so he’d be a likely starter for the crows

Bailey Williams was practicing goal kicking to end the session, I didn’t watch every kick but the 3 or 4 I did see were straight as an arrow

West coast seem to be streaming their training this morning. Good initiative if they go on with this sort of thing.

That was brilliant, some great insights.
Also loved shueys finger, a tree painted blue and simo shit stirring saying he's gonna drop Ryan(as Ryan walked past)

Seeing a fit Allen, Yeo, Sheed, Cole and McGovern out there plus Chesser and Hewitt looking like they belong at AFL level in the game on Friday night was a huge positive compared to this time last year.

Ah right, wasn’t aware Jones was at a funeral. That certainly explains it

If you watch the training do it with head phones you can hear kate orme and some others talking about it, had a rehersal last week, this week is the pilot run, Orme not a fan of boundary riding as its "bottom of the barrel"

The live stream is a great initiative and the sort of thing completely unexpected from the club.

Clearly a few teething issues with it, particularly people needing to learn to switch their mics off but it was good listening/viewing

Nothing groundbreaking or state secrets being revealed but having Schofield talking through what was being done and why gave some decent insight

Also good to note that we’ve appointed a full time dietitian among our off field acquisitions

Fuel for the next Kane Cornes 'flog it to death then keep going' article this week.

Dietition? I just assumed every club would have one. Part time in the past perhaps. If so a good move and well overdue.

So Shuey said to have a “niggle”whilst doubt on the round 1 availability of Naitanui and Darling for round 1 according to Duffield

Leads him into a discussion on striking the balance between getting older players back into the side vs exposing younger ones to AFL level.

Don’t entirely agree with what he’s saying but it makes for a decent read

The 2023 season could be a case of be careful what you wish for West Coast fans.
On the one hand, there is evidence that stars like Elliot Yeo and Liam Ryan are returning to their best. And youngsters like Campbell Chesser, Reuben Ginbey and Elijah Hewett appear primed to offer the club plenty in the mid-to-long term.

On the other, there was West Coast’s Monday morning training session and the perils of relying on the old rather than exploring the value of the young.

Jack Darling was on Mineral Resources Park’s second oval doing some light skill work and testing his injured left ankle but not looking like a player likely to get up for round one, as the club hopes he will.

And that was the good news. Nic Naitanui, who missed Friday night’s clash with Port with Achilles tendon soreness, appeared briefly on the track but left again. The Eagles aren’t sure if he will play in their round one dress rehearsal against Adelaide later in the week.

Then there was captain Luke Shuey, who appeared to the side of training but didn’t take part in main drills, doing some light work with fellow veteran midfielder Dom Sheed.

Officially, Shuey is being managed but the Eagles have confirmed there is a “niggle”. The skipper has missed both of the club’s last two match simulations – among themselves on March 17 and Friday night’s hit out against Port Adelaide.

That points more to an injury than management. And even if Shuey is being managed, doing so before he has even played an opponent doesn’t augur well for getting through the season with flying colours. The same could be said for Naitanui.

If they have a good run with injury – and if their stars return to something close to their best – West Coast will climb the ladder from last year’s 17th. But how far?

The best of Yeo, Ryan and Co. will get the Eagles up the table and may even drive them into the bottom end of the eight. But Ginbey, Hewett, Chesser and co are far more likely to be part of the push for the club’s next premiership.

If the Eagles needed evidence of this it came in the last few days. While Ginbey did not play in the win against Port Adelaide on Friday night Chesser and Hewett did.

Chesser, who has barely played football for three seasons because of a combination of injuries and the Covid pandemic which all but shut down junior football in Victoria, offered enough to suggest he is further advanced than he could reasonably be expected to be.

In the last quarter of the game Hewett, the Eagles second pick in the first round of last year’s national draft, not only entered the contest against Port but decided it, winning a critical clearance for his club then kicking the brilliant goal from a stoppage that edged them ahead.

He was a fresh young player competing against tired, older ones who had played three more quarters of football than he had. But, even allowing for that, this was a case of talent that doesn’t fall off the back of trucks, or arrive very often from the draft picks you get by finishing ninth on the ladder.

He handled the ball cleanly and strongly below his knees, spotted where dangerous space was and found a way to get there, doing something worthy with the ball when he arrived.

So, how many youngsters will miss chances to play in getting the oldies out there to get them there?

Ginbey, Hewett and Chesser all look capable of playing anyway but others may get squeezed. Brady Hough looked promising last year but has been with the “Possibles” not the “Probables” in match simulations of recent weeks.

The decision for Shannon Hurn to go on has meant Josh Rotham is also outside of the likely round one best 22 at this point, despite clearly having a big summer and playing well in most match simulations.

Would you really need a full time dietician? What would they do for 40 hours a week and 50 or so weeks a year? I would have thought you could have one you pay a consulting fee to to come up with a program for each player maybe.
